WSU wins its tourney

Jackie Albright had a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs and tournament MVP Cassie Robbins added nine kills and hit at a .353 clip to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 sweep of the Portland Pilots and a tourney title at the Nike Cougar Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday in Pullman.

In the first match of the day, Albright had a match-high 15 kills to go along with 16 digs and Robbins added 10 kills and five blocks to lead the Cougars (3-0) to a 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12 victory over the Montana State Bobcats.

•Layne Brosky had a career-high 18 kills, Michelle Boevers had 13 kills and a career-high 11 digs and Kaprina Goodwin chipped in with 10 kills and 11 digs, both career highs to help the Gonzaga Bulldogs rally for a 20-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 15-8 win over the Utah State Aggies in the first of two matches at the Weber State Invitational in Ogden, Utah.

In the second match, Chelsea Bair and Jenna Leggat combined for 28 kills and the Weber State Wildcats rallied for a 16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 15-9 win over the Bulldogs. Boevers had a match-high 17 kills and Brosky added 15 kills.

•Alicia Milo tallied 15 kills and Jennifer Feicht added 19 assists and 12 digs to power the Idaho Vandals to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-13 sweep over the Lamar Cardinals at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

•The 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks rolled to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-22 sweep over the Eastern Washington Eagles in the first of two matches at the Oregon Classic in Eugene. Chenoa Coviare and Cora Kellerman led EWU with five kills apiece.

In the second match, the San Francisco Dons swept the Eagles 25-23, 25-16, 27-25 despite EWU outhitting the Dons .152-.146.

•The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch won all four of their matches at the Chemeketa Invitational. CCS swept Shoreline 25-14, 25-16, 25-20; swept Walla Walla 25-19, 25-14, 25-10; beat Highline 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19; and defeated Chemeketa 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15.

Football

Ryan Robertson connected with Johnny Spevak for a 68-yard touchdown 59 seconds into the second half and the 14th-ranked Central Washington Wildcats beat the Mesa State Mavericks 10-0 in a season opener in Grand Junction, Colo.

Garrett Rolsma booted a 30-yard field goal at 10:46 in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Men’s soccer

Jose Dallesteros scored a goal eight minutes into the match and the North Idaho Cardinals breezed to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Western Wyoming Mustangs.

The Cardinals scored all four goals in the first 30 minutes. After Dallesteros opened the scoring, Thomas Brempong – with an assist from Evan Frobe – found the net at the 15-minute mark. Orlando Figueroa scored in the 18th minute and McKenzie Olivares assisted on a Jason Wheelock goal to cap the scoring.

Lewis and Clark graduate Chris Hollman and Alex Olmos teamed up in goal to earn the shutout.

Women’s soccer

Brittany Sparks booted a pair of goals to propel the Eastern Washington Eagles to a 4-1 season-opening victory over the McNeese State Cowgirls in a non-league match in Cheney.

Kirsten Fausko staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick. Sparks’ first goal – in the 25th minute – stretched the lead to 2-0.

Sarah Lowdon found the net for the Cowgirls to halve the deficit.

Whitney Brennan notched a goal in the 51st minute to make it 3-1 and Sparks capped the scoring with a goal in the 84th minute.

•Lauren Linford and Brittany Cook scored goals to help the North Idaho Cardinals earn a 2-2 tie with host Northwest University.

Cook’s goal – with an assist from Quincy Moore – gave NIC a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute, but the Cardinals surrendered the tying goal two minutes later.
