Sisters team to trip Cougs

Sisters Jontelle and Jasmine Smith combined for 43 points and 10 3-pointers Thursday as visiting Saint Mary’s defeated Washington State 80-70 in non-conference women’s basketball at Friel court.

Jontelle Smith had 24 points and hit 6 of 6 from the 3-point line. Jasmine Smith added 19 points and went 4 of 6 from behind the arc. Louella Tomlinson added 15 and blocked 12 shots for the Gaels (4-4), who shot 67.6 percent from the field.

Washington State (2-4) was led by Jazmine Perkins, who scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds and five steals. Kiki Moore had eight steals, setting a freshmen record for Washington State.

The Cougars forced a season-high 36 turnovers, including a season-best 20 steals.

•Hillary Carlson scored a game-high 20 points, hitting 7 of 12 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the line, as visiting Wyoming (7-0) rallied from a 10-point, first-half deficit to defeat Idaho 61-55 in non-conference play at Memorial Gym in Moscow.

Wyoming scored 23 points off turnovers and outscored Idaho 12-5 at the line in the second half.

Shaena Kuehu led the Vandals (1-7) with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Rodeo

Tyson Durfey of Colbert tied for third place in tiedown roping during the first round of the Wrangler National Finals in Las Vegas.

Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colo., placed first with a time of 7.5 seconds. Durfey’s time was 7.80.

Zack Oakes of Elk scored 74.50 to place sixth in bull riding. Kanin Asay of Powell, Wyo., won with an 89 on Hot Diggity Damn after getting a re-ride.

Cheney’s Ryan Gray placed 11th in bareback with a score of 81.

Jason Havens and Justin McDaniel upstaged Clint Cannon in the event, while Cannon added to his historic earnings total with a fifth-place tie.

Cannon, from Waller, Texas, set a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association record this year with regular-season earnings of $233,504 in one event.

Havens, from Prineville, Ore., and McDaniel, a former world champion from Porum, Okla., tied for first with 86s.

Volleyball

Dana Christiansen had a career-high 18 kills as Lewis-Clark State (25-9) completed its season with a 28-26, 21-25, 28-26, 22-25, 15-6 win over Doane (Neb.) College at the NAIA national tournament in Sioux Falls, Iowa.

The Warriors finished 1-2 in their pool and didn’t advance to the single-elimination final 12.

Football

The Spokane Shock of Arena Football 1 announced the signing of defensive back Ronald “Rock” Dillon and the departure of offensive lineman Josh Leonard, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad.

Dillon, 6-foot and 220 pounds, spent the 2008 season with the Grand Rapids Rampage.
