Cougars clobber Cowgirls
Jazmine Perkins scored 17 points as the Washington State Cougars beat the Wyoming Cowgirls 63-50 on Saturday in Pullman.
April Cook added 17 points for Washington State (3-4).
Wyoming (7-1) was led by Aubrey Vandiver, who scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds.
Washington State got out to a big lead in the first half. After the Cowboys tied the game at 10 with seven minutes to play in the half, the Cougar defense held them to only four more points and headed into the locker room with a 13-point lead, 27-14.
Washington State’s defense continued to pressure Wyoming in the second half, forcing 19 turnovers.
•Reserve Kimberly Smith hit 7 of 8 shots from the floor – 3 of 4 from 3-point range – en route to a game-high 21 points to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (2-1) to an 86-37 victory over the visiting Shoreline Dolphins (0-4).
Brooke Randall added 13 points for CC Spokane.
•Cassie Pilkinton notched 21 points and six rebounds, Kim Bluff scored 15 and Liz Horiatis added 12 points and six boards to power the Whitworth Pirates (3-3) to an 81-57 non-conference win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas (4-2) in Santa Cruz, Calif.
•The North Idaho Cardinals (8-1, 3-1) rolled to a 78-51 win over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans (2-9, 0-5) in Scenic West Athletic Conference play in Rangely, Colo.
Men’s basketball
Chris Pynch and Zach Humphrey each tossed in 22 points to power the CC Spokane Sasquatch (4-1) to a 75-65 win over the Green River Gators (0-2) in Auburn, Wash.
Danny Marshall added 13 points and eight rebounds for CC Spokane.
•Jordan Call came off the bench to score a career-high 16 and lead the Whitworth Pirates (2-2) to a 72-69 win over the McKendree Bearcats in the consolation game of the Lopata Classic, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
David Riley chipped in with 15 points, while reserve Felix Friedt added eight points and five rebounds.
The Bearcats, ranked fifth in the NAIA Division I poll, were led by the 20 points of Sean Rakers.
•Michael Hale tossed in 20 points and Taylor Stevens scored 11 to lead the North Idaho Cardinals (8-1, 3-1) to a 74-57 road win over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans (0-12, 0-5) in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Track and field
Eastern Washington Eagles’ Kersee Lind broke the school record in the heptathlon – scoring 5,033 points at the Candy Cane Invitational at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney.
Lind broke Matt Ludwigson’s 2007 record of 4,951 points.
Lind was among 19 Eagles who qualified for the Big Sky Conference championships. EWU men’s and Montana’s women won the meets.
Swimming
Whitworth’s Rory Buck qualified for the NCAA Division III championships in the 200-yard breaststroke after clocking an automatic qualifying mark of 2 minutes, 3.10 seconds in a preliminary round at the AT&T Short Course National Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
