In brief: County’s zoning vote Tuesday

From Local Reports

LIBERTY LAKE – Liberty Lake residents have a final chance to make their voices heard on a proposal to change the Spokane County Comprehensive Plan to allow further development on a parcel of land on the shore of the lake.

The 3.6-acre parcel, owned by Lancaster Enterprises, is at 24024 E. Lakeridge Drive. Like other parcels south of the Liberty Lake city limits, it is zoned rural traditional, which allows only one home per 10 acres. A proposed comprehensive plan amendment is before the Spokane County commissioners to change the zoning to low-density residential, which allows up to six homes per acre. One home is already on the property.

Neighbors and the Liberty Lake Sewer and Water District have previously been opposed to the change because of concerns about the water quality in the lake and an increase in density. After a public hearing, the Spokane County Planning Commission recommended the county deny the change because it is “inconsistent with the comprehensive plan and would set a negative precedent for rural areas.” The planning commissioners received 49 written comments and heard 11 oral comments, almost all against the project.

The county commissioners held a second public hearing last week and will accept written comments until 5 p.m. Monday. Comments can be dropped off at the Department of Building and Planning, 1026 W. Broadway Ave. The commissioners are expected to vote on the proposed amendment at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
