Cutting safety not the GOP way

The Spokesman-Review

The decision by the Spokane County commissioners to lay off 150 employees in county government is of great concern to Republicans. We stand for limited government but also for efficient government that serves the needs of the community.

Every poll I’ve seen rates public safety as the No. 1 priority of government spending locally. Careful strategic budget prioritizing is paramount in hard economic times like now! A secure economic base in our community is dependent on public safety, for families and businesses.

Even liberal King County closed every park before they eliminated fire or law enforcement positions. What the heck is going on in Spokane County when jail guards and deputy prosecutors get whacked?

This is not a good prioritization of resources, folks. Where are the voices of common sense and fiscal accountability in Spokane County? Why can’t union leaders work with elected officials to cut waste, prioritize spending and save jobs?
