In brief: Car rolls over near I-90, critically injuring driver

From Staff And Wire Reports

An 85-year-old Spokane man was in critical condition Saturday after a one-vehicle rollover near Interstate 90.

Spokane police said the driver, who was not identified, and his 88-year-old passenger – believed to be his wife – were westbound on Second Avenue in a 2003 Honda CRV about 11 a.m. when the vehicle left the roadway near Altamont Street and rolled onto its top. The car ripped out about 40 feet of chain-link fence along I-90 in the process, police said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Initially witnesses thought the car had driven off I-90, but investigators later determined the vehicle had been traveling on Second, which runs parallel to the freeway, police said.

The intersection at Altamont and Second was closed for about four hours after the crash.

The passenger suffered minor injuries.

Ex-UI student gets 7-year term for attempted rape

A 19-year-old former University of Idaho student was sentenced last week to seven years in prison after being found guilty of attempted rape in October, the Latah County prosecuting attorney’s office reported.

Brandon Morris Feder, of Boise, was tried after an attempted rape in February. Prosecutors said he attempted to have sex with a 19-year-old female student who was drunk and unconscious at an off-campus party in Moscow.

On Thursday, District Judge John R. Stegner sentenced Feder to seven years in prison. The sentence included a fixed two-year period of confinement, with a behavior review after six months to determine whether Feder is eligible for supervised release, officials said.

Feder is also required to register as a sex offender.

The climbers still missing are Anthony Vietti, 24, of Longview, Wash., and Katti Nolan, 29, of Portland. All three climbers have been described as experienced and well-equipped.

A search was set to resume at dawn for Vietti and Nolan.

Rescuers and equipment were being ferried over from Anacortes, which is just south of Guemes Island.

Backcountry residents safe after heavy snow, sharp cold

GREAT FALLS – U.S. Border Patrol agents and officers from the Blackfeet Department of Homeland Security reached several isolated ranches on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation earlier this week to make welfare checks after heavy snow and temperatures to 35 degrees below zero hit the area.

The patrol used a Black Hawk helicopter to reach some ranches more than seven miles off the main road that could not be reached by automobile.

The residents were safe but officials said they later returned to some ranches with off-road vehicles to deliver food and supplies.
