In brief: Kovalev nets 400th goal in Senators’ win

Hockey: Alex Kovalev scored three times, including the 400th goal of his career, to help the Ottawa Senators beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 Saturday at Ottawa.

With the score tied 2-2 late in the third, Kovalev took a shot on an Ottawa power play that deflected off the skate of Hurricanes defenseman Jay Harrison and past Manny Legace for goal No. 400. Kovalev added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Malkin’s OT goal lifts Pens past Panthers: Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal 37 seconds into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Seven seconds after Florida’s Jordan Leopold was whistled for holding, Sergei Gonchar set up Malkin for a one-timer from the high slot. It was the first goal in six games for Malkin, the reigning NHL scoring champion.

Canada beats U.S. for fourth time in five games: Marie-Philip Poulin and Caroline Ouellette scored 58 seconds apart in the second period, helping Canada to a 4-2 victory over the United States in a women’s exhibition match at Denver.

Gina Kingsbury and Meghan Agosta also scored for the Canadians. Karen Thatcher and Hilary Knight had third-period goals for the Americans, who have lost four of the last five to their top rival.

Ridnour carries Bucks past Blazers

Basketball: Luke Ridnour scored six of his 20 points in the second overtime, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 108-101 victory over injury-riddled Portland at Milwaukee.

Andrew Bogut made two free throws, but LaMarcus Aldridge, who scored a season-high 31 for the Trail Blazers, matched him with two of his own to tie it at 97. After an Aldridge miss, Ridnour hit from the corner and Carlos Delfino made a 3-pointer to put Milwaukee up for good at 102-97.

New Mexico downs No. 16 Texas A&M: Roman Martinez scored 22 points, including two key free throws in the final seconds, to lead New Mexico to an 84-81 victory over No. 16 Texas A&M at the Toyota Center in Houston.

Donald Sloan had 29 points for Texas A&M (8-2).

The Lobos never trailed and were ahead by 17 points with 10 minutes left but had to fight off a late rally by the Aggies.

Pullen scores 28 as K-State routs UNLV: Jacob Pullen hit seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points, and Kansas State pounded No. 18 UNLV 95-80 at Las Vegas.

Pullen was 7 of 10 from beyond the arc and 10 of 16 from the field, as the Wildcats shot 57 percent (28 of 49) for the game. Denis Clemente added 22 points and nine assists for Kansas State (9-1).

Wie’s charge falls short at Dubai

Golf: Michelle Wie’s late charge fell short at the Dubai Ladies Masters and In-Kyung Kim of South Korea claimed a three-shot victory at the season-ending tournament at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Wie shot a 7-under 65, tied for the day’s best round, but the 13th-ranked Kim responded to the pressure with a 4-under 68 that left her at 18-under 270.

Stricker and Kelly take one-shot lead at Shootout: Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly fell out of the lead for most of the day before rebounding nicely at the end of the Shark Shootout’s second round.

Stricker birdied No. 18 to finish a run of five birdies in six holes to get the team to 13-under 131 for a one-stroke lead over a trio of teams at Tiburon Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Fla.

Walchhofer wins World Cup super-G

Skiing: Michael Walchhofer of Austria won the World Cup super-G at Val d’Isere, France, beating Ted Ligety of the United States.

The former downhill world champion posted the 15th win of his career on the icy and steep Face de Bellevarde course in a time of 1 minute, 20.78 seconds. Ligety was 0.28 seconds back to match his season’s best.

Worley wins giant slalom; Vonn goes off course: Tessa Worley of France secured her second career World Cup victory by winning the giant slalom at Are, Sweden, while American Lindsey Vonn skied out in the first leg.

Vonn, the overall World Cup leader, came late into a turn near the start and lost control of her skis. After winning two straight downhills last weekend in Lake Louise, Alberta, Vonn is still looking for her first giant slalom podium finish.

Worley led after the first run and finished with a combined time of 2 minutes, 23.22 seconds.

Phelps wins 2 more races at Annapolis

Miscellany: Michael Phelps picked up two more victories at the North Baltimore Aquatic Center’s Christmas Meet held at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Lejuene Hall in Annapolis, Md., making him 4 for 4 for the weekend.

Phelps won the 400 individual medley and the 100 backstroke to add to his two victories on Friday. Today, he plans to compete in the 100 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

Bradley pounds Peterson to keep 140-pound title: Timothy Bradley defended his WBO 140-pound boxing title with a dominant unanimous decision over Lamont Peterson at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

With the hometown crowd chanting his name even before the opening bell, Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs) delighted his fans with his superior skill and speed, blemishing the perfect record of longtime friend Peterson (27-1).

B.J. Penn retains UFC lightweight championship: B.J. Penn retained his UFC lightweight championship with a fifth-round TKO of Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 107 at Memphis, Tenn.

Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight at 2:37 of the round after a Penn kick caught Sanchez, opening a gaping gash above the challenger’s left eye.
