In brief: Catch CYT-NI’s ‘Play in a Day’

COEUR D’ALENE – CYT-North Idaho is holding a “Play in a Day” on Tuesday and Wednesday for area kids who’d like to experience what it’s like to put on a fully staged play in just 24 hours.

Those who are interested can audition or sign up to be on crew at the Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Children will be on stage or working behind the scenes on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for CYT-NI, but it’s free for children ages 8 to 18 who participate.

Tickets for the performance are $15 per person and can be purchased in advance.

Recycle Christmas tree for no cost

COEUR D’ALENE/SPOKANE – The ABCO Wood Recycling fifth annual free Christmas tree recycling will be held through Jan. 11.

Now that the holidays are over and it’s time for your fresh-cut Christmas tree to come down, it’s important to dispose of it safely. The following North Idaho locations are accepting fresh-cut Christmas trees as part of ABCO’s tree-recycling event:

The ABCO Yard at Wal-Mart in Post Falls, 3175 W. Seltice Way; Kmart in Coeur d’Alene, 201 W. Neider Road; Triple Play in Hayden Lake, 175 W. Orchard Ave.; the ABCO Yard in Sandpoint, 484180 Highway 95 N.

Food bank seeks new home

OLDTOWN – The food bank/thrift store in Oldtown is in need of a new location. If community members know of a location available, they should call (208) 437-0143.

NIC Silver Valley classes available

KELLOGG/WALLACE – A number of North Idaho College Silver Valley Center classes still have space available. The classes begin in January. The center is at 323 Main St. in Kellogg.

Computers for Seniors will meet from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 12 through March 9. The class will cover basic computer operation, including file management, word processing and spreadsheets using the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Another section of the certified nursing assistant program has also been added to the NIC Silver Valley Center winter courses. Classes will be at Wallace High School, from 3 to 5 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 11.

Cost for credit classes varies depending on course load, and special rates apply to senior citizens.

Wild Game Feast tickets on sale

COEUR D’ALENE – Tickets are now on sale for the North Idaho College Alumni Association’s 11th annual Wild Game Feast, Jan. 23 at NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building in the Ts’elusm Dining Room at 5:30 p.m.

The event will begin with music, a silent auction and appetizers, such as Swedish-style buffalo meatballs, shrimp canapés, and duck sausage-stuffed mushrooms.

The five-course menu, served at 7 p.m., includes crayfish bisque; a butter leaf lettuce salad; roasted quail stuffed with wild mushroom and rice and served with a chasseur sauce and grilled acorn squash; and a white chocolate mousse tart topped with strawberries, huckleberry syrup and Grand Marnier chocolate sauce.

All proceeds benefit the NIC Alumni Association and scholarships for NIC students.

Tickets are $65 per person or $60 for NIC Alumni Association members. Limited seating is available.

Pageturners to meet Jan. 27

COEUR D’ALENE – The Public Library PageTurners Book Club will resume meeting on Jan. 27 at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave., at 10:15 a.m.

The book to be discussed at the January meeting will be “Sailing Alone Around the Room,” by Billy Collins. The discussion leader will be George Ives. Anyone interested in the book is welcome to attend.
