In brief: Kids Carnival planned at Plaza Shops

The Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance will host the fourth annual Kids’ Carnival Feb. 14 at the Resort Plaza Shops in downtown Coeur d’Alene, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children can participate in a number of art workshops with local artists, including music, pottery, painting, clowns and theater.

The cost is $5 per child, and scholarships are available.

Maasai dance troupe to perform

The Human Rights Education Institute, North Idaho College Diversity Events and the NIC Black Student Association have co-sponsored a cultural celebration event for Black History Month and invited The Friends of Sironka, a Maasai dance troupe from Kenya and northern Tanzania to perform in a free concert on Feb. 19 at the Human Rights Education Institute, located at 414 1/2 Mullan Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, at 6 p.m.

The event includes a history of Maasai culture, preceding the performance. Traditional hand-beaded Maasai jewelry and art will be on sale after the show.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Writers competition entry forms available

Entry forms for the 21st annual Writers Competition are available at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave.

The competition is for unpublished fiction and nonfiction prose of up to 2,000 words. Categories do not include poetry or rhyming prose due to the specialized nature of the judging criteria. Fiction and nonfiction are judged separately and by age groups: 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-18 and 19 and older.

Writers in each category and age group will be awarded $100 for first prize, $50 for second prize, and $25 for third prize. Cash awards are donated by the Coeur d’Alene Kiwanis Club.

The deadline for entries is March 31. Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than March 28.

Forms are also available online at www.cdalibrary.org/Events/FORM-Writers Competition.pdf. The entry fee for the competition is $1 for ages 6-11 and $2 for ages 12 and up.

Book sale benefits public health foundation

Panhandle Public Health Foundation, 8500 N. Atlas Road in Hayden, will hold its second annual Used Book Sale and Candy Contest Feb. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The sale will include used books, CDs, DVDs, board games and more. North Idaho College Culinary Arts students will judge entries from local bakers and candy-makers from Basic Kneads, Sweet Shop, Spokandy, Pastry and More, Great Harvest and Old World Confections to win culinary honors and lunch at NIC’s Emery’s restaurant.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for the candy contest entries. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six.

All proceeds from the sale and candy contest will benefit the Foundation.

Panhandle Public Health Foundation is a nonprofit organization, raising money to support public health services in the five northern counties.

KHS pet photo calendar offered at half price

The Kootenai Humane Society 2009 Pet Photo Calendar is on sale for $6, half price of the original $12 sale price.

Arts Alliance selling raffle tickets for trip

The Arts Alliance, 308 Sixth Ave. in Sandpoint, is selling raffle tickets to win a dream vacation, worth $3,500. The winner will be able to choose where and when they would like to travel. A $1,000 prize will go to the runner-up. The raffle is a benefit to support the arts in education.

The drawing will be held Feb. 24 at Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St.

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at Eichardt’s Pub, Outdoor Experience, Common Knowledge Bookstore & Teahouse, Coldwater Creek, American West Bank, Maps & More, Stiles Mountain Wear at Schweitzer, the Arts Alliance, and most other Sandpoint businesses.

All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Arts Alliance art center, offering classes for youth and adults in Sandpoint.
