Vandals duo wins titles at invite

Idaho’s Heather Bergland and Mychal Bothum claimed individual titles Saturday in Seattle at the Husky Classic indoor track and field meet, which drew more than 1,000 athletes.

Bergland won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.54 seconds with teammate Christie Gordon second (8.56), while Bothum took the women’s shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 51/2 inches. Another area winner was Wyoming’s Jake Shanklin, a Community Colleges of Spokane alum, whose 71-1/2 toss won the men’s weight throw.

Washington State sprinters had a solid day with runner-up finishes by Justin Woods in the 200 (21.46), Jeshua Anderson in the 400 (46.75), Lorraine King in the women’s 400 (55.08) and both men’s and women’s 4x400 relay teams. Other runners-up included Eastern Washington’s Cameron Moore in the men’s triple jump (48-23/4), Idaho’s K.C. Dahlgren in the women’s pole vault (13-73/4) and Washington’s Kelly McNamee of Ferris in the women’s high jump (5-101/2).

Swimming

Whitworth’s men sit in first place and the Pirates women are second after the second night of the Northwest Conference Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

The Pirates men, shooting for a seventh straight conference title, have a 17-point lead over Puget Sound. The Whitworth women, who ended Puget Sound’s 11-year reign last year, trail the first-place Loggers by 11.5 points.

The Pirates picked up four second-day wins – Michael Woodward (men’s 200-yard freestyle), Yasmeen Kheshgi (women’s 400 IM), Natalie Turner (women’s 200 free) and the women’s 800 free relay.
