Bulldogs win twice at tourney

The Gonzaga Bulldogs rebounded from a season-opening loss to earn a pair of college baseball victories at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix on Saturday.

Jason Chatwood and Ernesto Ortiz drove in two runs apiece as the Bulldogs (2-1) beat the Missouri Tigers (1-1) in the first game.

In the second game, Tyson Van Winkle was 3 for 5 with five RBIs in the Bulldogs’ 14-2 win over Nevada (1-2).

•The Whitworth Pirates shook off being winless in the round-robin portion of the tournament and earned two victories to earn the championship of the Peoria (Ariz.) College Tournament.

JR Jarrell had three hits to lead the Pirates (2-3) past the Washington & Lee Generals 6-5 in the semifinals.

Jarrell smashed a three-run homer in the championship contest to help the Pirates to a 15-4 win over Hastings.

College softball

North Idaho College (15-10, 13-5) completed a suspended game with a Scenic West Athletic Conference victory and then split a doubleheader with the College of Southern Idaho (13-7-2, 9-5) at Lewiston.

Track and field

Washington State’s Robert Williams edged Idaho’s Paul Dittmer in a neck-and-neck finish to win the 60-meter hurdles, with both runners timing 7.84 seconds, to highlight the Vandal Collegiate Indoor meet at the Kibbie Dome.

Dittmer’s effort eclipsed his 2-week-old school record of 7.93.

Whitworth’s Alyssa Thompson broke her school record in the triple jump, going 37 feet, 1 inch.

Junior hockey

The Grand Forks Border Bruins (11-39-2) handed the Spokane Braves (23-26-3) a 4-3 loss in KIJHL regular-season finale at Grand Forks, British Columbia.
