Sand: the other ice melter

The Spokesman-Review

I would like to suggest as an environmentally safe alternative to chemical ice melters the simple solution of sand.

Sand is an effective ice melter since the dark color attracts solar energy. It can be easily dispended using a garden trowel, it provides immediate traction, and it provides essentially the same coverage as the chemical melters.

Sand also has the following advantages over chemical melters: (1) no chemicals; (2) less cost (e.g. a 60-pound bag of sand is approximately $4, versus approximately $8 for a 40-pound bag of chemical ice melter); (3) it is entirely “pet safe”; (4) it can be stored from year to year without any deterioration; and (5) it can be used for other purposes as well (e.g. making concrete, garden projects, etc.).

I have no financial interest in sand sales. My recommendation is based solely on personal experience.
