Police chief better, ‘humbled’

Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell is improving after he was critically injured in a bomb blast at a Woodburn bank last month.

Russell, 46, lost his right leg in the Dec. 12 blast, which killed 51-year-old William “Bill” Hakim, an Oregon State Police bomb technician, and 51-year-old Tom Tennant, a captain in the Woodburn Police Department.

Russell has undergone 17 surgeries since the explosion. Two Marion County men, a father and son, have pleaded not guilty to various charges in the bombing.

In a statement released Friday, Russell said he is “humbled by the support shown to him, continues to lean on his faith, and looks forward to the day when he can return to serving his community.”

Russell remains at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.

Man, 92, charged in shootings

A 92-year-old man described as suffering from dementia has been charged with shooting and critically wounding his daughter and his son.

John W. Myers was charged with attempted aggravated murder in the Friday shootings of his 43-year-old daughter, Kim Mackintosh, and his 49-year-old son, Mark Myers.

Police led Myers away in his bathrobe after they found Mark Myers in the driveway with a gunshot wound to his chest and his sister on a couch inside the home with a gunshot wound to her head.

Mackintosh’s 12-year-old son, who was not injured, was hiding in a room in the house.

Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a police spokesman, said it was rare for anybody in their 90s to face attempted murder charges.
