University High School picked up an individual title from Ryan Zumwalt at 145 pounds and placed eight other wrestlers in posting an impressive third-place finish in Saturday’s Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula.
The Titans collected 155 points, but finished well behind Flathead High School, which amassed a tournament-record 269 points to claim the team title, and Havre, which finished second with 246.
Zumwalt gave U-Hi its sole individual title by posting a 6-3 win in the finals over CM Russell’s Nash Hallfrisch, a defending state champion from Great Falls, Mont., who had also won individual titles in the previous two Rocky Mountain Classics.
U-Hi, one of five Greater Spokane League schools competing in the 30-team tournament, also got a third-place finish from Jake Mason, who outpointed Ferris’ Andre Rivera 7-2 in their 160-pound consolation final.
But Titans coach Don Owen was most impressed with the sixth-place finish of Jacob Fry, another one of his 160-pounders, who wrestled up two weight classes and competed in the 189-pound bracket.
“It’s an extremely good tournament, and we only have one senior or our team,” Owen said. “Hopefully, that bodes well for our chances here next year.”
Central Valley finished fourth in the team standings with 146.5 points on the strength of Logan Ames’ second-place finish at 98 pounds. The Bears also got a third-place finish from Jarod Maynes at 105 pounds and placed six other wrestlers.
Coeur d’Alene, with seven placers and 136 points, took sixth in the team standings, while Mead finished seventh with 133 points.
CdA’s top finisher was Kenny Staub, who lost in the 119-pound title match to Flathead’s Alejandro Calderon. The Vikings also got a third-place finish from Sam Howard at 130 pounds and fourth-place finishes from three other wrestlers.
Mead got a third-place finish from its 285-pounder Carter Comito, who pinned his opponent in the consolation finals.
Other top local finishers included Lake City’s Marcus Banducci, who was third at 112, and Clarkston’s Gabe Hocum, who was third at 171.
Rocky Mountain Rumble: Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Deer Park each advanced a wrestler to the finals of their respective weight classes of this 64-team tournament in Orem, Utah, but Lakeside came home with the only local individual champion when Jacob Lauderdale defeated Payson’s Brock Brown in the 125-pound finals.
Deer Park, which finished fourth in the team standings, got a second-place finish from 152-pounder Cody Miller, who was pinned by Sedro-Woolley’s Derek Garcia in 1:59 of his championship match.
The Stags also got a third-place finish from Ethan Grable, who beat Delta’s Spencer Nielsen 6-3 in the 215-pound consolation final.
River City Duals: Host Post Falls finished second to Columbia of Nampa in the title match, losing 48-23.
