Wake Forest stays unbeaten, hands Clemson first loss

Jeff Teague scored 24 points and No. 2 Wake Forest set a school record with a 16-0 start, handing No. 10 Clemson its first loss of the season, 78-68 on Saturday in Clemson, S.C.

The Demon Deacons (16-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) looked like they had this one in hand, leading 58-44 after L.D. Williams’ 3-pointer with 9:32 left.

However, the Tigers (16-1, 2-1) used a 16-3 run over the next 5 minutes to pull within 61-60.

Teague rushed the ball up court on Wake’s next possession, finding a sprinting Al-Farouq Aminu for a dunk. James Johnson followed with a free throw and two baskets and the Demon Deacons were on their way to surpassing the school mark for best start that was established in 1926-27.

•Duke beats Georgetown: Gerald Henderson scored 23 points and No. 3 Duke held on to beat No. 13 Georgetown 76-67 in Durham, N.C., for its eighth straight victory.

Duke (16-1) won its Division I-best 68th straight non-conference game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. DaJuan Summers scored 21 points for the Hoyas (12-4).

•Orange crush Irish: Arinze Onuaku matched his season high with 19 points, Paul Harris added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 8 Syracuse (17-2, 5-1 Big East) beat No. 12 Notre Dame 93-74 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Big East scoring leader Luke Harangody had 25 points and 16 rebounds, his 10th straight 20-point game and seventh consecutive double-double, to lead the Irish.

•Baylor women roll on: Jessica Morrow and Melissa Jones hit consecutive 3-pointers for fifth-ranked Baylor (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) just after No. 22 Oklahoma State (12-4, 1-2) grabbed the lead and the Lady Bears then pulled away for a 75-57 victory in Waco, Texas. It was Baylor’s ninth straight win.

Golf

Fujikawa shoots 62

Eighteen-year-old high school senior Tadd Fujikawa delivered the best round of his life at the Sony Open in Honolulu, making birdies on half of his holes for an 8-under 62 that left him two shots out of the lead and gave golf its biggest buzz since the Ryder Cup.

Zach Johnson played bogey-free for a 66 and finished atop a leaderboard so crowded that a dozen players were separated by three shots, giving just about anyone a chance to win.

•Norman-Haas leads: Greg Norman and Jay Haas won the first three skins worth $90,000 and had the lead after nine holes in the wind-swept Champions Skins Game in Kaanapali, Hawaii.

Fuzzy Zoeller and Ben Crenshaw were in second place with one skin worth $30,000, while the teams of Jack Nicklaus-Tom Watson and Gary Player-Berhard Langer were shut out on the first day of the alternate-shot event.

Winter sports

Americans finish 2-3

Didier Defago of Switzerland won a World Cup downhill in Wengen, Switzerland. American Bode Miller finished second and Marco Sullivan of the U.S. was third.

•Cottrer tops field: Italy’s Pietro Piller Cottrer won a men’s World Cup cross-country ski race in Whistler, British Columbia, on the venue that will host the 2010 Winter Olympics and then said it’s a shame organizers didn’t build a better course. Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk, who won the women’s 15K pursuit, was also critical of the Whistler Olympic Park course, saying it was too easy.

•Davis wins race: Shani Davis of the U.S. won the 1,000 meters at the world sprint speedskating championship in Moscow, Russia.

In the women’s competition, defending overall champion Jenny Wolf of Germany won the 500.

NBA

Rockets defeat Heat

Yao Ming set a Houston record by going 12 for 12 from the field, and finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rockets past the visiting Miami Heat 93-86.

•Mavericks end skid: Dirk Nowitzki took out all sorts of frustrations on the visiting Utah Jazz, hitting 16 of 20 shots from the floor and scoring 39 points to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 115-108 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.

•Bobcats edge Blazers: Gerald Wallace had 31 points and 16 rebounds, Emeka Okafor hit the clinching free throws with 2.7 seconds left in overtime and the Charlotte Bobcats beat the Portland Trail Blazers 102-97 in Charlotte, N.C.

•Paul leads Hornets: Chris Paul had 23 points and 14 assists to help the New Orleans Hornets hand the Detroit Pistons their fifth straight loss, 91-85 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

David West added 20 points for the Hornets, who had six players in double figures.

•Celtics in a rout: Ray Allen scored 25 points, including nine in an 18-2 run to open the game, and the Boston Celtics rolled past the New Jersey Nets 105-85 in East Rutherford, N.J.

NHL

Stars nip Kings

Mike Ribeiro scored the lone goal in the shootout, Marty Turco stopped all three shots he saw in the tiebreaker and the Dallas Stars beat Los Angeles 3-2 in Dallas to extend the Kings’ skid to four.

•Ducks blank Wild: Corey Perry’s two goals and Jonas Hiller’s fourth shutout this season sent the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minn.

Miscellany

East beats West

Marlon Lucky rushed for 68 yards and a TD and the East defense stopped the West three times inside the 10-yard line to secure a 24-19 win in the East-West Shrine Football Game in Houston.

•De Villiers takes Dakar: Giniel de Villiers held onto his nerves in the last stage to become the first South African to win the Dakar Rally motor racing event in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mark Miller of the U.S. was second.

•Henderson victorious: Former two-division champion Dan Henderson won a close split decision over former middleweight champ Rich Franklin at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland. Henderson won the bout and a coaching job on season nine of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show.

•DeScenza sets record: Mary DeScenza set an American record in the 200-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 51.28 seconds and won the 200 backstroke at the Long Beach (Calif.) Grand Prix swimming meet.
