Academic woes cost Huskies two RBs

Two University of Washington running backs were ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming football season.

Huskies athletics spokesman Richard Kilwien said that Brandon Johnson, a junior from Hawthorne, Calif., and David Freeman, a sophomore from Inglewood, Calif., did not meet academic standards.

Johnson rushed for 194 yards in nine games last season, making him the team’s third-leading rusher. Freeman was fifth on the team with 152 yards in four games.

Basketball

The Spokane Sunz will be among a seven-team expansion the American Basketball Association announced.

Others joining the league to compete against current teams the Washington Raptors and Seattle Mountaineers are: Seattle Tremors, Everett Longshoremen, Yakima Hoppers, Portland Stumpers, Walla Walla Aggies and Vancouver (Wash.) Explorers.

Play begins in December.

Golf

Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, tied for second place in stroke play and qualified for match play at the PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Williams shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to finish at 139, one shot behind winner Tyler Mathews of Redmond, Wash. First-round leader Sam Cyr tied Williams.

Also advancing to match play were Spokane’s David Fern and Hank Frame. Fern tied for 23rd with a 145 total, while Frame tied for 55th at 149.

•Sara Ovadia, of Santa Barbara, Calif., shot a 1-over-par 73 to finish at 1-over 145 and earn medalist honors at the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Arrowhead Golf Club in Molalla, Ore.

Spokane’s Brittany Wilcox shot an 81 to finish at 167 for 31st place.
