Sports in brief: Shock catch worthy of a marquee

Arenafootball2: Spokane Shock wide receiver Markee White earned the af2’s Big Game Catch of the Week honor for his one-handed leaping grab for the game-winning touchdown in a 56-52 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers last Saturday night at the Arena.

White held on to the ball despite being sent over the dasher boards by the Pioneers defender.

What to check out at Games

Wheelchair Games: Some of the events going on today at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Swimming: Imagine what it’s like to swim competitively with little leg movement, or without lower extremities. Competition includes breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and butterfly.

Quad rugby: The original name for this sport is “Murderball.” A tough, high-emotion contact sport developed for quadriplegic athletes and unique to wheelchairs. Played on a basketball court by four-member teams.

Power soccer: Sport for motorized wheelchairs played on a basketball-size court by two four-member teams using a large rubberized ball. The aim of the game is to get the ball across the opponents’ goal line.

Slalom: Partici- pants maneuver every which way to get around a challenging obstacle course.

•Also, weightlifting, air guns and bowling.

Ex-Chief signs with Hartford

Hockey: Former Spokane Chiefs defenseman Trevor Glass signed with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

Glass, 21, finished his junior hockey career with the Spokane Chiefs.

He helped the Chiefs win the 2008 Memorial Cup after being acquired in a trade during the season.

Kamimura new Cougar coach

Golf: Washington State University has hired Kelli Kamimura as its women’s golf head coach, Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced.

A native of Burlington, Wash., (Sedro Woolley HS), Kamimura most recently served at Pepperdine University, first as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate coach in August 2007.

Prior to joining Pepperdine’s staff, Kamimura served as the assistant women’s golf coach at her alma mater, the University of Washington.

Kamimura inherits the women’s program from Walt Williams, who served as head coach of both the men’s and women’s program for the past 11 years. Williams will continue to coach the men’s team.
