Investigation begins into sea gull clubbing

Mcclatchy

SEATTLE – The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating allegations that two state troopers clubbed three sea gull fledglings to death at Colman Dock last week.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Capt. Jeff DeVere said the troopers, assigned to the Homeland Security Division that protects the state’s ferries and ferry docks, have been placed on administrative leave until an investigation is completed. The troopers have not been named because they have not been charged. One has been on the force for 13 years, the other for 10.

Because the state classifies sea gulls as a protected species, the State Patrol turned the investigation over to Fish and Wildlife, DeVere said.

Someone within the State Patrol reported the incident Thursday, DeVere said. Fish and Wildlife was then contacted, he said.

DeVere didn’t know whether Washington State Ferries asked the troopers to eradicate the sea gulls or if they allegedly acted on their own. Fish and Wildlife began its investigation on Monday, said Bruce Bjork, chief of enforcement. It is gathering physical evidence and taking statements from witnesses and the troopers.
