Two die when buses ambushed near mine

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia’s state news agency said gunmen have fired on a convoy of 12 buses carrying employees of U.S. mining company Freeport in Papua, the latest attack on the world’s largest gold mine.

Antara said two people were killed in today’s attack.

It did not identify the victims or say if they were shot.

An Associated Press reporter was told by a witness that a police vehicle escorting the convoy flipped during the attack.

Several injured officers were taken to a local clinic, the AP reporter said.

At least a dozen people have been killed or wounded in ambushes since July 11 along a road leading to the mine.

Freeport declined comment. Police did not return phone calls.
