Prison’s a hair-razing experience

A prison mug shot of Phil Spector reveals that life behind bars is not kind to the legendary music producer’s sense of style.

Spector, 69, known for his elaborate hairstyles, had to abandon his wigs after being sentenced last month to 19 years to life for killing actress Lana Clarkson.

“They took my husband’s freedom and dignity. So why not his hair?” said Spector’s wife, Rachelle, who had suggested that her husband’s thick mane was his own.

“This is a personal matter,” she added. “But in case you don’t know, they don’t allow for much accessorizing while in prison.”

Dave fouls one off

David Letterman has backpedaled from wisecracks aimed at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughters.

One of the jokes on Monday’s show involved the family attending a New York Yankees game, with Letterman saying “an awkward moment” occurred for Palin when “during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”

That seemed to refer to 18-year-old Bristol Palin, an unwed mother, but 14-year-old Willow was at the game.

Todd Palin issued a statement that said “any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable.”

Letterman said Wednesday he wasn’t referring to Willow, adding: “I’m not necessarily proud of these jokes. … Thank God we don’t have to go to the Hague and the World Court to defend them.”

Chastity Bono, the daughter of Sonny and Cher, is having a sex change to become a man.

A family spokesman said the 40-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star, who came out as gay 20 years ago, is “proud of his decision.”
