Injured Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun was hospitalized Saturday in Hartford, Conn., after he collapsed following a 50-mile charity bicycle ride during which he fell and broke five ribs. Maureen McGuire, a spokeswoman for the UConn Health Center, said Calhoun, 67, told her he hit a pothole and fell with about 16 miles to go in the ride. He finished the ride, but moments after he crossed the finished line, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

Graduated Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman has graduated from UCLA 21 years after starring for the Bruins. Aikman participated in Saturday’s graduation ceremony on the Westwood campus along with 450 other graduates. He earned his sociology degree earlier this year, having left college as the No. 1 pick in the 1989 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Fined The NBA has fined Lakers coach Phil Jackson $25,000 for criticizing the officials during Game 4 of the Finals. The league also penalized the Lakers $25,000 on for Jackson’s comments, which came during an interview with ABC between the first and second quarters of their 99-91 overtime victory Thursday.

Decided UCLA guard Jrue Holiday has decided to remain in the NBA draft and will hire an agent, which makes him ineligible to return to the Bruins.

•South Carolina guard Devan Downey says he is withdrawing from the NBA draft and returning to school for his senior season.

Died Halfback Billy Bye, who played at Minnesota in the 1940s, has drowned in a boating accident in Brainerd, Minn. He was 81. Authorities say Bye’s motor became entangled. He freed the motor but was unable to get back in the boat despite attempts by passengers to throw him ropes and lifejackets. Bye played for the Gophers from 1946 to 1949 and was their most valuable player in 1946.

Bill Nichols, a sports writer at The Plain Dealer who broke the story that Cleveland was getting an NBA expansion team in 1970, has died in Rocky River, Ohio. He was 80. Nichols covered the Cavaliers for more than a decade and Cleveland State basketball. After leaving The Plain Dealer in 1994, Nichols worked as an official scorer at Cleveland Indians games. He taught journalism at Baldwin-Wallace College, Hiram College and John Carroll University.
