Braden 10th at nationals

Forest Braden, a Gonzaga University assistant coach from Bonners Ferry, placed 10th in the men’s 10,000-meter run Thursday at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Eugene, Ore.

Braden finished in 28 minutes, 43.98 seconds. Galen Rupp of Oregon won in 27:52.53.

Mattie Bridgmon of Oregon, an Eastern Washington transfer, took 19th in the women’s 10,000 in 34:10.51. Winner Amy Begley, competed for Nike, ran 31:22.69.

CC Spokane assistant coach Ryan Weidman placed 17th in the men’s javelin with a throw of 207 feet, 5 inches. Weidman fouled on his first two attempts. Georgia’s Chris Hill won at 275-2.

Washington State’s Moreno Zapata placed 18th in the men’s triple jump at 48-43/4. Winner Brandon Roulhac of HPC Elite jumped 54-81/4.

Men’s golf

Spokane’s David Fern is tied for fourth place heading into the final round of the 83rd Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman.

Fern, who shot a 4-over-par 76 in windy conditions during the third round, trails Derek Berg of Kenmore, Wash., by five shots.

Spokane’s Hank Frame is tied for seventh at 216.

Women’s golf

Pamela Burneski of Surrey, British Columbia, shot a final-round 7-over 79 to win the 16th Washington State Golf Association Women’s Amateur at Oakbrook Golf and Country Club at Lakewood, Wash.

Burneski (228) finished two shots ahead of Bellevue’s Cathy Kim and Seattle’s Leslie Folsom, and five shots ahead of Spokane’s Crissy Higgins, who fired a final-round 77.

Spokane’s Brittany Wilcox tied for ninth at 245.
