In brief: Golfer Hanson heads hall of fame class

Former Lakeland High School and LPGA golfer Tracy Hanson is among five slated for induction into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hanson will be joined by retired Coeur d’Alene High School athletic director and coach Larry Schwenke, former University of Idaho basketball player Dale James, former Idaho and Coeur d’Alene football standout James Hatch and former Lewiston and Tumwater prep football coach Sid Otton.

The inductions will take place at the North Idaho Sports Banquet on April 11 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn.

The event honors top area athletes, coaches and teams.

Hansen, a 1993 San Jose State University graduate, joined the LPGA tour in 1995. She was a four-time All-American at SJSU.

Schwenke, a native of Whitefish, Mont., retired from CHS in 2007. His 35-year career including four seasons as head football coach (30-12-2) and 14 as head softball coach (362-44). The Coeur d’Alene School District named the CHS softball field in his honor.

James, a Pendleton, Ore., native, played two years at Idaho where he set the record for highest free-throw shooting percentage (.873, 171 of 197). He coached high school teams in Lewiston and Eagle Point, Ore., was head coach at Treasure Valley CC and Columbia Basin College before nine seasons as an assistant at North Idaho College.

Hatch, who died Nov. 4, 2007, coached high school football at three schools in Washington before settling in Cheney in 1964. He coached at Cheney and served as athletic director before retiring in 1988.

Otton, a Lewiston native, owns the most wins among high school football coaches in Washington history. He collected his 300th win at Tumwater in 2007.
