New Gadgets to Help You Save Energy - Money

Tom Lienhard, PE, BSME, CEM, CLEP Avista
Living in the Pacific Northwest, we have some of the lowest energy prices in the nation. However, we’re all still looking for ways to save energy in and around our homes. The explosion of electronics has driven a healthy increase in the amount of energy used in our homes. As consumers, we make excellent gains when we buy a new Energy Star appliance, but unfortunately, adding new electronics to our homes can off-set the original gains. According to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), using a plasma TV for five hours a day is the energy equivalent of one and one half refrigerators. So, using energy wisely, while saving money and time, is what most of us are after. Many of our home electronics are interdependent – for example our printers need our computers, but they can’t tell if our computer is off or on – however, a little known device called a Smart Strip Plug Strip automates shut down tasks for you. No more crawling behind the computer or TV to get at the switch. The Smart Strip consists of three types of plugs – the master plug, some controlled plugs and some uncontrolled plugs. You simply plug your computer into the master plug, and then plug in all the peripherals into the controlled plugs. When you power-off your computer, the Smart Strip automatically shuts off your printer, scanner and anything else that’s plugged into the Smart Strip. Conversely, when you turn on your computer, the peripherals all come again – using the Smart Strip can save on your energy bill. And, for those of you bothered by the flashing 12:00 o’clock sign, simply plug those devices which are reset on power loss into the uncontrolled outlet of your Smart Strip – that way, you’ll have fewer frustrations. The same process would hold true for your entertainment system. There are numerous gadgets on the market that can lighten the energy load in your home – consider using a solar cell phone, iPod or computer charger or any number of the following devices. Every little bit really does make an impact on saving energy, money and time too. Furnace Filter Whistle – Whistles when filter is 50% clogged Shower Coach Timer – Teaches kids and adults to spend less time in the shower, helps save dollars and energy too. Reusable Dryer Balls – Reduces dryer time by 25%, replaces fabric softener, helps fluff clothes and is made from recycled plastic. 7-Day Programmable Hot Water Heater Thermostat – Programs water heaters to turn on and off when needed.
