Kiwanis gives to food bank

The Spokane Valley Kiwanis Foundation recently funded a grant for $4,342.56 to Spokane Valley Partners, which is in the process of a major expansion of its community Food Bank at 10814 E. Broadway Ave.

Spokane Valley Partners CEO Ken Briggs accepted the check, which will purchase an electric pallet truck.

The Spokane Valley Kiwanis Foundation was formed in 1996 for the purpose of financing projects beyond the scope of the Spokane Valley Kiwanis Club. Since its formation, the foundation has made grants totaling $30,403. The foundation usually limits its grants to capital projects where it can be identified with a particular item.

Langford planning to seek re-election

Liberty Lake City Councilman Odin Langford has announced that he will be seeking re-election in November. He was appointed to the council in October 2007 to finish the term of Joanna Klegin, who resigned to move to Texas. Langford had run against Klegin in the November 2003 election and lost by only 17 votes.

“It makes a lot of sense to me,” Langford said of his decision to run again. “I want to do my share to maintain control of the growth of government.”

Langford had a 25-year career in law enforcement, retiring as a captain from the Harahan, La., Police Department. He moved to Liberty Lake in 2002 with his wife, Jill. He currently works for HWA, a federal security contractor.

Broadway, Fancher work shifts

Reconstruction of the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Fancher Road was to shift at 7 a.m. today from the west to the east side of the intersection.

Area businesses will remain accessible, but westbound Broadway traffic will detour onto Lake Road, Desmet Avenue and Fancher. Eastbound traffic will go around the intersection on Fancher, Alki Avenue and Eastern Road.

City officials say the $562,000 project is expected to be finished late this month.
