Mt. Spokane soccer stays alive

Mt. Spokane won and Shadle Park fell in 3A regional boys soccer loser-out openers Saturday.

Colin Schafer and Nate McCloskey scored Mt. Spokane’s goals as the Wildcats (5-10) topped North Central (7-9) 2-0 at Albi Stadium.

Sunnyside scored four first-half goals on its way to a 6-0 win over visiting Shadle Park (2-11).

Mt. Spokane and Sunnyside advance to take on the top seeds. Mt. Spokane visits West Valley of Yakima and Sunnyside will take on East Valley at Albi when play resumes Wednesday. Both matches are at 5 p.m.

McCloskey assisted on Schafer’s goal, which came in the 55th minute. Schafer took a deflected ball and put a shot on goal that squeezed just inside the post.

Four minutes later, McCloskey’s shot from 25 yards sailed just over the head of the goalie into the net.

•Tri-District 1A: Manson topped visiting Lakeside 4-1 in a loser-out match.

Manson built a 4-0 lead before Casey Duclos scored for Lakeside (7-6-1) in the 56th minute.

District 8 4A: The time for Tuesday’s championship match between Mead and Lewis and Clark at Albi Stadium has been changed to 5 p.m. The game will determine the No. 1 and 2 seeds to regionals.

Baseball

GNL tiebreaker: Pullman scored early and often to down Clarkston 10-3 at Colton in a tiebreaker to decide the second seed to the District 7 2A tournament.

The Greyhounds (12-4) will be the second seed and earn an opening-round bye. In loser-out district openers Tuesday, Deer Park takes on Clarkston (14-5) and West Valley meets Colville.

Nicky Scourney allowed just one hit and struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Jamie Fertakis hit a two-run homer in the first and Cody Weber added three RBIs.

•District 7 1A: Lakeside (16-3) earned a regional berth with a 5-4 win over visiting Freeman (16-6).

In a loser-out game, Chewelah (12-10) edged Newport (7-14) 5-4 in nine innings at Chewelah.

Chewelah and Lakeside face off Tuesday at a site to be announced to decide a second regional berth.

Mike Dunn hit a bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to provide the winning run for Lakeside. In the top of the inning, Jacob Kitterman hit a run-scoring double to tie the score. Freeman then attempted a squeeze play, but the runner was thrown out at the plate.

At Chewelah, a hit batter and two walks allowed Chewelah to load the bases in the ninth. Then with two outs, Nathan Burkey knocked in the winning run with a single.

Softball

Great Northern League: Pullman swept Cheney 5-0 and 18-7 at Cheney.

The first game featured a pitching duel until the Greyhounds broke it up with five runs in the sixth, four coming on a grand slam by Amy Sterk.

Pullman (14-3, 11-1) needed just five innings to win in the second game. Sterk went 4 for 5 with two more homers and seven RBIs. Becca Holmbo was 3 for 3 with a homer. Mandy McDowell was 2 for 3 for Cheney (4-13, 3-9) with a homer and two RBIs.
