The Slice: No reason to jump to conclusions

New to Spokane?

Here’s one thing you need to know: Jump Off Joe Lake is a real place name.

Let’s move on.

•Finish this sentence: Getting involved in our neighborhood association made me realize that …

•Knot a problem: The Slice has noted that the tangling of earphone cords is a force of nature (3/27/07).

But Leonard Hermens takes this a step further.

“I made an observation during some recent air travel and came up with this question: Ever wonder how many collective hours are wasted every day from people untangling their music player earbud/headphone cables before they can be used?”

•This date in Slice history (2001): What is the Inland Northwest definition of “well-traveled”?

•Not being able to remember people’s names: “I’m the second worst,” said Fritz Howard, facilities coordinator at Whitman Hospital & Medical Center in Colfax. “I forget who’s first.”

Lou Sachse nominated her husband, Tom, as having the worst memory for names. “However, his description of folks as he’s trying to think of their names is very entertaining.”

•Today’s reminder that you are getting old: The set-in-Washington movie “Say Anything” is 20 years old this spring.

•Sweet: Set-in-Idaho “Napoleon Dynamite” will be five years old this summer.

•Call for photos: So you think yours is the best-looking softball team in this area? See if The Slice’s panel of judges agrees.

•Keeping score: If you do a simultaneous Google search on “Spokane” and “Rocky and Bullwinkle” you get about 1,400 hits.

•Warm-up questions: Where were you when you were surprised to see an eagle? Are some of those who were thinking of staging insanely expensive weddings/receptions next month now considering scaling back? What percentage of adults in the Inland Northwest have experienced intimate social congress on a railroad train? Who in your extended family is most famous for bruising like a peach? How many residents of Athol, Idaho, have read or seen performed the works of Athol Fugard? Who has this area’s smallest boat? Do you have any neighbors with whom you have exchanged waves but never actually met?

•Today’s Slice question: Downtown Spokane has multiple personalities. It all depends on what time of day you happen to be out and about. Not counting weekends, which is your favorite?
