Cheney advances in OT

Paul Holloway scored from 6 yards out on a throw-in by Daniel Igbinoba in the second overtime to lift Cheney to a 2-1 victory over Bellingham in a State 2A boys soccer quarterfinal match Saturday in Cheney.

Bellingham took a 1-0 lead just 4 minutes into the match, but that was it against Blackhawks goalkeeper Andrew Wilson, who finished with nine saves.

Cheney (17-2) will face Prosser in the semifinal round Friday at 8 p.m. in Sumner.

Prosser advanced with a 2-0 win over Medical Lake (12-9). Mynor Maza scored both goals for the Mustangs.

Tennis

4A: The Greater Spokane League will be represented well at the state tournament after its showing at the regional tourney in Yakima.

Mead’s Ethan Vaughn is the top seed in boys singles after a 6-0, 7-5 win over Richland’s Troy Zuroske in the title match. Lewis and Clark’s Zach Williams earned the third and final berth with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Kamiakin’s Josh Thornton.

Mead’s Ryan Gerbin and Bryan Lee advanced to state in boys doubles as a No. 3 seed after rallying for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over a Wenatchee duo.

Gonzaga Prep’s Anna Lambert earned the top seed to state in girls singles after cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Wenatchee’s Katie Willis. Central Valley’s Leslie Ho earned the third berth with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Eastmont’s Rebekah Waterhouse.

Mead’s Britta and Katijene Stime grabbed the top seed to state in girls doubles with a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Wenatchee’s girls and Richland’s boys earned team titles. The state tourney begins Friday at Kennewick’s Kamiakin High School and Tri-City Court Club.

•3A: The GSL didn’t fare as well in Sunnyside. The league’s lone representative at state in Vancouver beginning Friday will be Mt. Spokane’s girls doubles team of Kellee and Katie Bates. They will be the No. 2 seed. Hanford’s girls and boys earned team titles.

•2A: Clarkston’s girls and boys won team titles after play in Pullman.

Headed to state beginning Friday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle are boys singles champion Dustin McConnell of Clarkston and runner-up Carl Vollmer of Pullman; boys doubles champions Garret Mullen and Chris Chappell of West Valley and runners-up Drew Adams and Derek Young of Clarkston; girls singles champion Elise Rooney of Clarkston and runner-up Brianna Bazo of Medical Lake; and girls doubles champions Katie Van Cleave and Katie Servatius of Clarkston and runners-up Anh Phan and Dru Sanchez of West Valley.
