Santa Clara drops Zags in standings

Katherine Douglas had 17 kills and 10 digs Thursday as visiting Santa Clara (15-11, 5-6) broke a fifth-place tie in West Coast Conference volleyball with a 3-1 win over Gonzaga (9-16, 4-7) at Martin Centre.

Terran Poindexter had 10 kills and 12 digs for the Bulldogs.

•Sarah Conwell totaled 19 kills and 18 digs as host Idaho (14-13, 10-4), the third-place team in the Western Athletic Conference, swept last-place San Jose State (1-24, 1-13).

Debbie Pederson added 10 blocks for UI, which is 6-0 in WAC play at Memorial Gym.

•Whitworth senior hitter Tracy Schwada was named honorable mention on the All-Northwest Conference team. Schwada’s .270 hitting percentage was No. 7 in the NWC.

Men’s basketball

University of Portland coach Eric Reveno announced the signing of Gonzaga Prep’s Ryan Nicholas to a letter of intent.

Nicholas, 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, led the Bullpups to fourth place at last year’s State 4A tournament. Nicholas averaged 14.9 ppg for the Greater Spokane League champs.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth senior forward Elly Bulega, who has totaled five goals and six assists for the playoff-bound Pirates, was named NWC Offensive Player of the Year.

Pirates senior defender Bryan Olson and sophomore midfielder Justin Meyer (six goals, four assists) also made the first team.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Sherpe, sophomore defender Nic Shaw, sophomore midfielder Cameron Bushey, senior midfielder Brent Zahn and senior forward Keith Kirsch made the second team.

Junior midfielder Travis Gutierrez and sophomore defender Nate Spangler were named honorable mention.

Women’s soccer

Washington State senior midfielder Carly Dobratz, who has compiled five goals and three assists this season, was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team.

Senior forward Kiersten Dallstream and junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo made the second team for WSU. Dallstream leads the team with 13 goals and 33 points. Berlingo has posted 12 wins and seven shutouts.

Midfielder Mel Johnston and defender Mariah Cameron made the All-Freshman team for the Cougars (13-5-2), who open NCAA Division I play tonight at College Park, Md., against Villanova.

•Whitworth junior midfielders Elizabeth Mattila and Sidonia Davin were selected to the All-NWC first team. Mattila led the Pirates with eight assists. Davin scored five match-winning goals.

Defender Anisa Babar and midfielder Lindsey Oakes (seven goals, six assists) made the second team for the Pirates (17-3).

Whitworth’s honorable mention selections were midfielder Sarah Berentson, goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom, midfielder Mackenzie Grow and forward Stacy Hamer.

Puget Sound sophomore defender Abby Goss (University High) made the first team. George Fox senior forward Jenny McKinsey (Central Valley High) made the second team.

Men’s golf

Justin Haase, a three-time All-GSL first-teamer from Lewis and Clark, signed a letter of intent to play for Seattle University.
