Lindeman wins high-scoring JBT

Staff And News Service Reports

Lane conditions were the story during the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Deer Park Lanes last Sunday.

Pins were flying like kindling with a 300 game, a near-perfect 299 and 12 other games of 260 or better before the championship match, which produced one of the lowest-scoring matches of the day.

Curtis Lindeman, who had games of 287 and 262 en route to earning the top seed in the finals, cooled off, but prevailed 214-169 over hard-charging No. 5 qualifier Dalton Shears for the title. Lindeman wound up averaging 252 for nine games. Shears had the 299 in his second match and two 268 games.

Mitch Lukes, who spiced up the first four-game block with a perfect game and added a 269, finished third; Thomas Locke, who had a 268 and two 267s, was fourth; and Drake Shoup, who had a 269, was fifth.

Alex Earle rolled a 270 and Ryan Gately had games of 260 and 266. Megan Froman led the girls with a 237.

The next JBT will be the doubles tournament Dec. 6 at Valley Bowl.

College scene

Sophomores with Greater Spokane League ties are the Community Colleges of Spokane scholar-athletes of the month for October.

Armarose Bailey, a cross country runner from Mead, received the female award. Bailey, the team captain who has been among the Sasquatch’s top five finishers in every meet this fall, has lowered her 5,000-meter time by 90 seconds, running 19:38 at the Lewis-Clark State Invitational at the end of October. She has a 3.28 grade-point average and was selected to the district athletic committee.

The male winner was Matt Miller, a soccer player from East Valley. The forward/midfielder, who broke a bone in his foot as a true freshman and received a redshirt season, has been a regular starter in his third year and is one of the Sasquatch’s captains. He has a 3.17 GPA.

Chris Shaw, a junior midfielder at Puget Sound from Coeur d’Alene Charter, was given honorable mention on the All-Northwest Conference men’s soccer team. He started 19 games and had four goals, three of them winners, and one assist for 9-9-2 UPS.

Sarah Krabacher, a senior goalkeeper on the Puget Sound women’s soccer team from Sandpoint, made her first collegiate start in the Loggers’ season-ending match and recorded a 1-0 shutout victory over Linfield. Thanks to a stingy defense, she did not have to make a save.

Kylie Broadbent, Western Washington’s senior goalkeeper from Lewis and Clark, was a second-team selection on the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer team. She had a 10-2-3 record with eight shutouts and a 0.77 goals-against average.

Jenny McKinsey, George Fox’s senior forward from Central Valley, wound up her collegiate soccer career with seven goals, two of them winners, and five assists for the Bruins.

McKinsey, who spent her freshman season at Pacific Lutheran before transferring, wound up with 30 goals, 20 assists and 80 points in three seasons at George Fox. The assists are No. 1 on the school’s career list, the points No. 2 and the goals No. 3. She earned four All-Northwest Conference awards, including her third second-team honor this season after first-team recognition as a junior.

Golf

Zach Wanderscheid of Goldendale, Wash., the 2009 Pacific Northwest Junior champion, has signed a letter of intent with the University of Idaho, Vandals coach Jon Reehoorn announced.

Wanderscheid, who won the PNW Junior title on the UI course, also won the Washington State 1A high school championship and tied for second in the Washington State Junior. He was named 2009 junior boys player of the year by the PNW, Washington Junior and Washington State.

Seventeen former Spokane Chiefs are among 253 former Western Hockey League players who have received scholarship money to attend college from the teams for which they played.

The ex-Chiefs and the schools they attend:

Seth Compton, Eastern Washington; Curtis Kelner, Arizona State; Steven Gillen and David Linsley, University of Saskatchewan; Chad Klassen, Derek Ryan and J.P. Szaszkiewicz, all University of Alberta Edmonton; Jevon Desautels, University of Calgary.

Volleyball

Bailey Wold of West Valley, a two-time All-Great Northern League selection, has signed a letter of intent with Corban College in Salem, Ore, coach Nels Norquist announced.

Wold, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter who helped the Eagles to three straight state playoff appearances, also excels in track and field as a triple jumper and pole vaulter. Corban announced she will continue her two-sport career there.
