Baylor easily handles Idaho

Idaho got a taste of what life is like among the elite in women’s college basketball Friday night.

It wasn’t very palatable for the Vandals.

Melissa Jones scored a career-high 23 points and had 11 rebounds as No. 8 Baylor held Idaho to six field goals and 15 points in the second half of an 82-37 victory in Waco, Texas.

Morghan Medlock scored 12 and Shanay Washington 10 for Baylor (4-1), which opened the second half with a 16-4 run.

After scoring in double figures in her first four college games, Baylor freshman Brittney Griner was the focus of the Vandals’ defense. She finished with six points, five rebounds and three blocked shots before leaving with 9:40 left.

Bianca Cheever scored 11 points to lead Idaho (0-4), which was 14 of 52 from the field and missed 23 of 31 attempts from 3-point range.

Idaho will play Lamar (4-1), a 66-58 winner over Louisiana-Lafayette, in the second round of the World Vision Classic today.

“You pick your poison,” Idaho coach Jon Newlee said of focusing on Griner while leaving other Bears to pretty much do their thing. “We took our chances with the 3 and they knocked them down. That’s the way it goes.”

• Regina Rogers matched her career high with 12 points and gathered a career-best six rebounds, leading Washington to a 64-46 rout of Eastern Washington in the first round of the Husky Classic in Seattle

Sami Whitcomb and Mollie Williams added 10 points apiece for UW (2-2).

Brianne Ryan led Eastern (3-2) with nine points. Julie Poper and Tatjana Sparavalo chipped in eight apiece for the Eagles.

Washington used a 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. The Eagles clawed back to within 15-11, but an 11-0 Huskies surge was too much to overcome.

Men’s basketball

Community Colleges of Spokane had four players in double figures and made some key stops down the stretch to pull out an 89-87 win over Everett in the first round of the Red Devil Classic at Longview, Wash.

The Sasquatch, who saw a 20-point lead in the first half disappear in a barrage of Everett 3-pointers, got a 3 from Chaz Johnson and a rebound tip-in by Danny Marshall in the late going to hold off the Trojans.

Kevin Bond led CCS with 20 points and Griffon Jones added 19 and nine rebounds. Zach Humphrey had 16 points and Marshall finished with 11.

The Sasquatch will play host Lower Columbia in the semifinals tonight at 8. The Red Devils beat Southwest Oregon 81-63.

•Renado Parker had 19 points to lead three Cardinals in double figures as North Idaho defeated Central Wyoming 74-67 in the first round of the Findlay Hyundai Classic at Christianson Gym in Coeur d’Alene.

NIC, which trailed 19-9 before surging to a 39-36 halftime lead, overcame CWC’s 3-point shooting from the free-throw line, making 22 of 35 to 14 of 19 for the visitors. CWC made 9 of 31 3s to 4 of 15 for NIC.

Michael Hale III added 12 points and Logan Jones 11 for the Cardinals.

NIC plays Williston State tonight at 7:30 as the tournament concludes.

Girls basketball

Melissa Hopkins had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Priest River to a 43-37 win over Lakeland in a non-league game.

The Hawks got within four points in the fourth quarter, but Tristan Troudt hit four free throws for the Spartans to seal it.
