The Slice: It’s the perfect recipe for cute and funny responses

The Slice’s decision to not run kids’ turkey-cooking tips on Thanksgiving Day was met with disapproval in certain quarters.

Though this theme has long been a favorite of mine, I feared readers might be tiring of “Get all the blood off and then cook it on 14 for an hour.”

But apparently at least a few of the Slice faithful have come to look forward to seeing the children’s culinary counsel on an annual basis. So how can I make it up to them?

I’ll start, as always, by asking for the help of area grade-school teachers. And I’ll request that they invite their pupils to briefly answer a few seasonal food questions and send me the results.

1. What exactly is eggnog?

2. What are the three most important ingredients in fruitcake?

3. What is figgy pudding?

4. What’s the most important thing to remember when cooking a goose?

5. What’s the difference between holiday cookies and regular cookies?

Slice answers: Several readers who have to listen to Christmas music all day at work insisted that they enjoy it.

I believe them. But it might be worth noting that it is still November.

Multiple choice: Which best describes your bridge club?

A) Congenial. B) Cutthroat. C) A bubbling cauldron of resentments and seething recriminations. D) Food obsessed. E) A lot of laughs. F) Bridge club? Yeah, right. When Ward’s at work. G) Other.

Rating airports: Warren Myers said Singapore’s is his favorite and Philadelphia’s is the worst.

Cindy Wallgren described Savannah’s as awesome and called Seattle’s horrid.

Velta Ashbrook likes flying through Chicago but not Dallas-Fort Worth.

Today’s Slice question: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “It’s still a spiritual time” and 10 being “Rampant consumerism has totally crushed any religious interpretation of Advent,” how would you rate the commercialization of the season?

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; fax (509) 459-5098; e-mail pault@spokesman.com. No, you aren’t the one who has eaten the most pie.
