Chiefs lose in preseason

EVERETT – Despite 43 saves by James Reid, the Spokane Chiefs came up short in their preseason opener, falling 3-2 to Portland at Comcast Arena on Friday afternoon.

Radim Valchar scored in each of the first two periods for the Winterhawks, who went up 3-0 midway through the third.

Kenton Miller scored a power-play goal for the Chiefs with less than 4 minutes to play. Then rookie Matt Martz made it a one-goal game with 28 seconds to go.

The Chiefs were outshot 46-19 and gave up two power-play goals.

Nine newcomers suited up for the Chiefs.

Spokane plays Tri-City this afternoon at 3 and Everett Sunday at 3 p.m.
