In brief: Wildfire near border 20 percent contained

Fire crews expect to work through the weekend to contain a 100-acre wildfire burning near Northport, Wash.

The Nine Mile Bridge fire, burning near the Canadian border in Stevens County, was about 20 percent contained Friday, fire officials said.

The blaze, ignited by a lightning storm a few days ago, sat smoldering before erupting Thursday during a brief period of high winds, said Bernie Jones, fire information officer with the state Department of Natural Resources.

Crews hope to have the fire contained Sunday, with mop-up on Monday. Helicopters dumped water on the fire Friday, while ground crews dug trenches around the blaze, Jones said.

No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported.

The area, on the west-facing slope on the east side of Little Sheep Creek, is a popular hunting and camping spot for local residents, Jones said.

Imprisoned ex-sheriff has cyst, not cancer

LEWISTON – An attorney says a former Nez Perce County sheriff who took medical leave and was later sentenced to prison for helping a burglar in a high school break-in does not have pancreatic cancer.

Jim Dorion’s attorney, Joseph P. Filicetti, told the Lewiston Tribune that Dorion’s pain is from a noncancerous pancreatic cyst.

Filicetti had previously said Dorion would need surgery for pancreatic cancer and that his client believed he had cancer.

But Filicetti says he learned of the diagnosis of a cyst from medical reports compiled by the Idaho Department of Correction for a hearing on Dorion’s medical condition.

Filicetti then contacted the newspaper to correct the record about Dorion’s medical condition.
