Cougs improve to 10-0

Jackie Albright and Meagan Ganzer combined for 29 kills and Renee Bordelon added 38 assists and 12 digs Saturday as host Washington State kept its volleyball record unblemished with a 3-0 sweep of Cal State Northridge in the Nike Cougar Challenge at Bohler Gym.

The Cougars (10-0) hit .339 as a team in a 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 win over the Matadors (3-6), who had posted a 3-1 victory over Idaho earlier in the day.

UI (4-4), after losing to WSU in five games on Friday, hit a season-low .073 against Northridge. Sarah Conwell and Alicia Milo combined for 25 kills for the Vandals.

•Gonzaga University (3-6) rode the career-high 19 kills of senior Layne Brosky to a 3-2 upset win over host Tulsa (7-2) in its first match of the day, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Stephen F. Austin (7-5) to close out play in the Radisson Tulsa Airport Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. The Bulldogs, who finished 1-3 in the event, were paced by senior Michelle Boevers’ 13 kills in their loss to SFAU.

•Whitworth University stunned sixth-ranked La Verne in three sets in its opening match in the Cal-Lu-Fornia Volleyball Classic in Thousand Oaks, Calif., but missed its chance at a second upset by dropping a five-set heartbreaker to 16th-ranked Trinity (Texas).

•Community Colleges of Spokane, behind all-tournament selection Nicole Graybeal, beat Umpqua 3-0 but fell to Tacoma 3-1 in the 12-team Inland Northwest Communications Tournament at SFCC. North Idaho College beat Edmonds 3-1 and Walla Walla 3-0.

Women’s soccer

Amanda Schmedding and Itzia Mendoza each scored two goals for CCS as the Sasquatch (2-1-1, 2-0 NWAACC) thumped visiting Green River (0-2, 0-2) 5-0 at SFCC.

•Brittany Cook scored in the first overtime to lift visiting North Idaho College (1-1-3) to a 1-0 win over Western Wyoming in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Men’s soccer

Garden City (4-0) got goals from four different players in a 4-0 win over the North Idaho Cardinals (2-4) in Garden City, Kan.

Hockey

The Tri-City Americans outshot Spokane 44-27 and scored all of their goals in the third period to post a 3-0 win over the Chiefs in a preseason Western Hockey League matchup in Kennewick.

•Dylan Tappe had three goals and two assists to lead the Spokane Braves to a 12-4 win over the Columbia Valley Rockies (0-2) in their KIJHL season opener at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Rodeo

Ryan MacKenzi, from Jordan Valley, Ore., posted a score of 84 to outpoint Cheney’s Kayle Gray (80) in the second night of the saddle bronc competition at the Spokane Interstate Fair Rodeo.
