Post Falls still unbeaten in league

The second time around was much smoother for the Post Falls volleyball team.

Led by a balanced attack, Post Falls remained unbeaten in 5A Inland Empire League play, topping visiting Lewiston 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 at The Arena.

The first time the teams played at Lewiston, the Trojans had to rally from a two-game deficit.

“We knew exactly what to expect,” said Post Falls coach Willow Hanna, whose team improved to 9-4 overall, 4-0 in league. “We talked about the things we needed to get done and we did it.”

Lewiston (5-7, 1-3) opened a 23-20 lead in the first game, but with senior Danielle Meehan behind the service line, the Trojans ran off the final five points, including an ace from Meehan.

That surge propelled Post Falls to a 19-7 lead in the second game before a rash of service errors allowed the Bengals to tighten the score.

Meehan, Jalana White, Tori Bertsch and Ashley Jibby each had four kills to lead the Trojans.

•In a non-league match involving IEL teams, Moscow topped visiting Coeur d’Alene (2-14) 25-18, 25-20, 25-23. Shae Carson led CdA with 11 kills.

Greater Spokane League: University (3-1) swept Rogers (0-3) 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 at Rogers. Kayla Carpenter led the Titans with eight kills and two blocks and Jordan Schmerer had 15 digs. Kayee Ziong led the Pirates with 16 digs. … Lewis and Clark (2-1) got 13 kills, four blocks and two aces from Janele Vogt as the Tigers topped East Valley (1-3) at EV. Allie Riggin had 11 kills for EV.

Great Northern League: In a battle of winless teams, visiting Cheney (1-3) broke through with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 win over Medical Lake (0-4). Alexa Mason led the Blackhawks with 11 kills. Myryda Johnson led the Cardinals with eight assists and six digs. … Pullman (3-0) swept Deer Park 25-16, 25-13, 25-11 at DP. Katie Guettinger led the Greyhounds with 17 assists. She and Danielle Hodge had five aces each. … West Valley (3-1) swept visiting Clarkston (3-1) 25-18, 25-10, 25-22. Bailey Wold had 14 kills and Brooklyn Robinson had 38 assists to lead WV. … Colville (3-0) swept Riverside (2-2) 25-16, 25-9, 25-14 at Riverside. Emily Pond led the Indians with nine kills and two aces.

Girls soccer

5A Inland Empire League: Coeur d’Alene (6-4-2, 4-1-0) possessed the ball well and got a goal each from Ashlie Ward and Kady Suhr in a 2-0 win over visiting Lewiston (3-4-3, 1-2-2). The Vikings outshot the Bengals 20-6.

•In a non-league match between IEL teams, Lake City (4-2-3) shut out visiting Moscow (4-7-1) 4-0. The Timberwolves didn’t allow the Bears a shot. Nicole Danner scored twice for LC. … In another non-league match, Sandpoint (7-4-1) blanked Post Falls (3-8-0) at PF. Meghan Pagano, Elli Engel and Alicia Mertz scored for the Bulldogs.

Great Northern League: Kellie Zakrzewski and Molly Gough each had a hat trick and Luci Scott scored two goals to lead Cheney (5-1, 3-1) to a 10-0 win over visiting Riverside (0-5, 0-4). … Visiting Deer Park (2-3, 2-2) upset league-leading Medical Lake (3-2, 3-1) 4-3. Shaylie Barcellos scored the winning goal in the 70th minute. It was her second goal. The Stags doubled up the shots on the Cardinals (28-14). … Pullman (5-0, 3-0) moved into first place with an 8-1 win over Clarkston (0-5, 0-4) at Clarkston. Niina Al-Hassan scored three goals and had four assists. She has 12 goals overall. … West Valley (4-1, 3-1) outshot Colville (1-3, 1-2) 34-2 in a 7-0 win at WV. Sarah Marro had a hat trick and Deedee Garbe scored twice.

5A Inland Empire League: Coeur d’Alene (8-1-4) swarmed the visiting Bengals (1-6-1, 1-4-0) of Lewiston 8-0. Shelbey Barrera had a hat trick and Jordon Eborall had two goals as the Vikings outshot Lewiston 21-1.

•In a non-league match between IEL teams, Sandpoint (8-1-2) blanked Post Falls (5-3-2) 3-0 at Sandpoint. The Bulldogs outshot the Trojans 22-3. … At Moscow, Lake City (3-4-1) used two late first-half goals to top the Bears (6-4-1) 4-2. Nick Higgs was solid in goal for the Timberwolves. Chris Wheelock had two goals for LC.

Rodeo

Ryan Gray of Cheney tied for second in bareback riding in the first round of the Justin Boots Championships at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

Gray scored 83 and finished tied for second with Justin McDaniel of Porum, Okla.

Zack Oakes of Elk, Wash., tied for fifth with seven others in bull riding.
