Whitworth wins on penalty kick

After 90 minutes of static offense by Whitworth and Puget Sound, the Pirates (5-1-1, 3-0) finally found the net in the seventh minute of overtime on a penalty kick from Travis Gutierrez in a 1-0 men’s soccer road win Saturday in Northwest Conference action in Tacoma.

The Loggers (4-5, 1-2) had their chances in the second half but could not convert.

Goalkeeper Chris McDonald allowed his first goal in 361 minutes.

•The Community Colleges of Spokane (2-6, 2-1) drew first blood against Peninsula Community College with an Andrew Mastronardi goal in the 13th minute, but PCC took over after the intermission to win 3-1 at Spokane Falls CC.

Brent Ricigliano and Mike Avey came off the bench to score the tying and go-ahead goals for the Pirates (4-3-2, 1-1-1).

•North Idaho College waited until the last minute to score its first goal of its match with Westminster College to tie 1-1 in Salt Lake City.

Thomas Brempong scored on an assist from Evan Palo in the 90th minute for NIC (3-4-1) after trailing most of the second half.

Volleyball

For the second straight meeting between North Idaho College and College of Southern Idaho, it was No. 2 NIC that pulled off the upset of top-ranked CSI, winning 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22 at home. Match statistics were not available.

•Whitworth’s woes at the net continued against George Fox (9-3, 2-2) as the Pirates hit .075 while the host Bruins pounded out a .350 hitting average to sweep the match 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 at Newberg, Ore.

•Eastern Washington (8-5, 4-0) stayed perfect in the Big Sky, sweeping Weber State (2-12, 1-3) 25-16, 25-21, 26-24 at Ogden, Utah. Chenoa Coviare had 12 kills and four blocks for EWU.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth played evenly with the No. 1-ranked Puget Sound Loggers for the first half of their Northwest Conference battle, but the Loggers found their footing in the second, scoring twice for the 2-0 victory in Tacoma.

Callie Bergstrom played well in the net for the Pirates (6-2, 3-1), but UPS (6-0, 3-0) forward Kelly Anderson scored in the 49th minute.

Cross country

Lewis-Clark State’s Dave Marks and Jake Miller finished 1-2 at the Runners Soul/Erik Anderson Invite 8,000-meter race at Plantes Ferry Park to propel the Warriors men’s team to a runaway first-place finish with 25 points.

The Gonzaga women took the 5,000 race with 54 points, paced by Molly Funk’s 19 minutes, 34.471 seconds. The top time went to Whitworth’s Dana Misterek, who crossed in 19:04.593.

•The Washington State men took fifth at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational with 108 points at the 8,000 course in Minneapolis. Sam Ahlbeck was the top Cougars finisher in 25:07. The WSU women took sixth with 200 points, led by Lisa Egami’s 22:28 in the 6,000 run.

Hockey

Spokane scored twice in the third period against Chase, but the goals came too late and the Braves fell 4-2 in Spokane. Jesse Collins and Joel Stenart scored for Spokane.
