Two WSU runners win

The Washington State track and field team saw a pair of winners emerge on the third day of the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday, as Jeshua Anderson and Anna Layman won the 400-meter hurdles and 800 meters, respectively, at Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.

Anderson ran a season-best time of 49.11 seconds in the hurdles, while Layman won the Olympic Development 800 in 2:06.8.

The Eastern Washington team of Sarah Frey, Brianna Okoro, Shene Davis and Whitney Leavitt placed fifth in the women’s 400 relay in 46.28.

•Chanel James had a big day for Community Colleges of Spokane at the Spike Arlt Invitational, winning the 100 and 200 and taking part in winning efforts in the 400 and 1,600 relays in Ellensburg.

Whitworth’s Jeff Kintner demolished the competition in the shot put, throwing 56 feet, 51/4 inches, while Carter Comito won the discus with a throw of 165-3.

•EWU’s Erica Chaney moved into fifth in school history in the discus and shot put with throws of 155-0 and 45-3 3/4, respectively, at the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.

•Laura Volcheff and Brittany O’Regan finished second and third in the women’s 5,000 to lead Gonzaga to one of its best showings of the season at the Montana Open in Missoula.

Baseball

Cole Cook stifled the Gonzaga offense after the Bulldogs (13-21-1, 2-2-1 West Coast Conference) scored 16 runs in the series opener, allowing two runs on seven hits in nine innings as Pepperdine (12-18, 2-2) evened the three-game set with an 11-2 win in Spokane.

•Steve Selsky had three hits and four RBIs as Arizona (25-9, 6-5 Pac-10) pounded out 16 hits to beat Washington State (19-13, 3-5) 13-6 in Tucson, Ariz.

•Jeremy Probert had six hits, three runs and seven RBIs over both halves of Pacific’s Northwest Conference doubleheader against Whitworth (8-23, 5-12), adding two home runs in the second game as the Boxers (12-20, 10-10) swept the Pirates (13-10, 17-12) at Merkel Field in Spokane.

•Justin Jones allowed two runs on 10 hits over 82/3 innings and California (21-10, 7-4 Pac-10) just held on to beat Washington (19-14, 4-4) 3-2, throwing out the game-tying run at the plate to end the game in Berkeley, Calif.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (18-10, 6-6 NWAACC) split with Yakima Valley CC (21-8, 9-3), winning 4-3 after falling 6-2 in the opener in Yakima.

Softball

Generra Nielson earned wins in both contests, holding North Idaho (28-24, 21-19 Scenic West Athletic Conference) to two runs on four hits in the opener, as College of Southern Idaho (37-16, 28-11) swept the last two games of the season series 4-2 and 8-7 in nine innings in Coeur d’Alene.

•Shadle Park grad Samantha Skillingstad outdueled No. 1 Washington’s (34-4, 6-2) Danielle Lawrie, allowing no runs on four hits as Oregon (30-7, 6-2) won 4-0 to pull even atop the Pac-10 standings in Eugene, Ore.

Skillingstad combined with fellow freshman Jessica Moore to shut out the Huskies for just the second time this season, while Lawrie struck out nine, but allowed four runs on seven hits.

•Heather Hesselgesser drove in all five Whitworth runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning, and Jessica Mangis earned a win, allowing one run on five hits, as the Pirates (16-13, 10-11 NWC) won 5-1 over Pacific (20-12, 15-5) at Diana Marks Field in Spokane. The Boxers took the nightcap 6-2.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (12-17) went 3-1 on the first day of the Yakima Crossover Tournament.

Rowing

The No. 13 Washington State women’s team took first in the varsity 8 third heat, finishing the day with 32 points and in a tie for second with one day left at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif.

The Cougars finished in a time of 6:50.6 to beat Wisconsin (6:51.97) and Sacramento State (7:11.06).

•Led by a 14-second victory in the Varsity 8 race, the Gonzaga men won their 20th Fawley Cup in the last 22 years, taking three of the four races to beat Washington State at the Wawawai Landing outside Pullman.

The Bulldogs ran a time of 5:58.52 in the Varsity 8 and added wins in the Freshman 9 and Second Freshman 8.

Women’s tennis

Megan Wingfield’s 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6 singles over Kate Kunkel clinched the tournament championship win for Whitworth, as the Pirates took the title match of the Northwest Conference tournament 5-3 over Whitman to earn their second straight NCAA Division III tennis tournament berth at the Yakima Tennis Club.

Men’s golf

Josh Kay shot an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors and lead Whitworth to a win at the Whitman Invitational in Kennewick.
