In brief: Food drive to benefit Holidays and Heroes

CHESTER – Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies will hold a food drive today at Barney’s Harvest Foods, 11205 E. Dishman-Mica Road, from 8 a.m. to noon to benefit Holidays and Heroes.

The nonperishable food collected will be used to support the program, which benefits area children who might not otherwise have a family Christmas or Christmas dinner. Monetary donations also will be used to take children shopping for Christmas presents and supply their families with food for the holidays. The goal is to reach 100 children.

The fundraiser is sponsored by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane Valley Police, Kootenai County Law Enforcement, and local fire departments.

Woman collecting winter gear, clothing

MILLWOOD – Jenny Hoff, a local activist against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is collecting winter gear for those in need.

Hoff will have a winter coat collection and give-away table in the parking lot at Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, when Second Harvest Food Bank will be handing out food on Friday.

Hoff is asking the community to donate gently used blankets, coats, scarves, gloves and boots of all sizes. Adult sizes are in greater need, but all sizes are appreciated. Any items leftover from the collection will be donated to local homeless shelters.

Donations may be dropped off at Hoff’s residence, 8918 E. Dalton Ave. She has asked that if she is not at home, to leave the donations on the front porch.
