Student hungry for more news
Since I moved to the region in September from Portland to attend Eastern Washington University, I’ve enjoyed reading The Spokesman-Review to learn more about the region. I especially enjoy the local news coverage and Doug Clark’s writings of the region and his time at Eastern.
I have one simple request: that the university support weekend newspaper reading.
The university doesn’t buy newspapers for students over the weekend as they do during the week, or let students like myself, who live in residence halls, subscribe to newspaper delivery. There’s one not-very-accessible copy of the paper in the library, when it’s open, and culled of all advertisements.
We can agree that forcing students to pay the cover price is an unnecessarily expensive proposition, especially those of us who grew up with the tradition of reading daily newspapers. Additionally, a newspaper can be read when Eastern’s outage-prone computer network is down, and it provides much more information than the local cable system focused on entertainment versus education or civics.
I hope that with an open appeal to university administrative and student leaders I’ve contacted with no luck, they’ll change policies regarding this matter.
