In brief: Gibbs, Dixon lead Pitt over No. 5 Syracuse

Men’s College Basketball: Ashton Gibbs scored 24 points and Jermaine Dixon added 21 to lead Pittsburgh to an 82-72 victory Saturday over No. 5 Syracuse at Syracuse, N.Y. The loss was the Orange’s fourth straight at home to the Panthers (12-2, 2-0 Big East) and dropped the number of major unbeaten teams to four.

Syracuse (13-1, 1-1) shot 42.4 percent from the field on 28-of-66 shooting and was 1 of 13 on 3-pointers.

Lucas, Summers lead Spartans over Northwestern: Kalin Lucas scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half Saturday night and No. 11 Michigan State pulled away and routed No. 25 Northwestern 91-70 at Evanston, Ill.

Michigan State (11-3) used its speed, depth and a 12-0 run to build a big second-half lead and win its Big Ten opener.

Northwestern (10-3, 0-2) lost its second straight since breaking into the Top 25 for the first time since 1969.

Fogg leads Arizona over UCLA: Kyle Fogg scored a career-high 25 points, Jamelle Horne added 17 and Arizona defeated UCLA 77-63 at Los Angeles to salvage a split on its opening Pac-10 road trip.

The Wildcats (7-7, 1-1 Pac-10) lost by six points at Southern California on Thursday. But they took command early against the Bruins (6-8, 1-1) in a game that began at 10 a.m. to end their two-game losing skid.

California cruises to victory over Stanford: Jerome Randle had 24 points and seven assists, and California cruised to a 92-66 victory over rival Stanford at Berkeley, Calif., in the conference opener for both teams.

Max Zhang had a career-high 13 points to go with four rebounds. Theo Robertson added 10 points and six rebounds for Cal (9-4, 1-0 Pac-10).

Jeremy Green scored 23 points and Landry Fields had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Stanford (6-7, 0-1).

Lillard’s career day lifts Weber State over Montana: Damian Lillard scored a career-high 30 points as Weber State beat Montana (10-6, 1-3) 64-56 at Ogden, Utah.

Lillard’s biggest shot of the game came in the closing minutes when he hit a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to break a 54-54 tie. He then gave the Wildcats (9-6, 3-0 Big Sky) a 59-54 lead with a layup with 39 seconds left.

Portland notches win over Arm y: Ethan Niedermeyer scored a season-high 14 points and Luke Sikma had 12 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to lead Portland (9-5) to a 67-57 victory over Army (9-4) at Portland.

Banged-up Blazers beat Warriors

NBA: Brandon Roy scored 37 points, Andre Miller added 23 and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Golden State Warriors 105-89 at Portland despite dressing only eight players.

Monta Ellis paced the Warriors with 30 points. Corey Maggette added 22 points and 10 rebounds and Anthony Randolph had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

Martell Webster had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Portland. The Blazers have been hampered by a spate of injuries and essentially played six players. Rookie forward Jeff Pendergraph started but played just 9 minutes. Shavlik Randolph, a recent acquisition with an injury exemption, played less than a minute.

UConn routs Seton Hall for 800th win

Women’s College Basketball: Tina Charles scored 19 points and Kalana Greene added 16 to help top-ranked Connecticut rout Seton Hall 91-24 at Newark, N.J., for the Huskies’ 51st straight victory in the Big East opener for both teams.

Maya Moore had 14 points for the Huskies (12-0).

The victory was the 800th in school history, making UConn the ninth school to achieve that milestone.

Evans beats Silva during UFC 108

Mixed Martial Arts: Former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans beat Thiago Silva by unanimous decision at UFC 108 at Las Vegas, bouncing back from his only professional loss.

Evans used his superior wrestling skills to control the bout through the first two rounds, then survived the third round after nearly being knocked out by a straight right from Silva. All three judges scored the bout 29-28.

Germans sweep luge World Cup event

Miscellany: Tatjana Huefner secured her 20th career victory as Germans filled the top four places in a luge World Cup race at Koenigssee, Germany, and Erin Hamlin finished fifth to lead the U.S. to its best showing of the season.

Huefner clocked the fastest time in both runs to earn her fourth victory of the season in a combined time of 1 minute, 35.324 seconds.

Hamlin, of Remsen, N.Y., finished in 1:36.304.

Randall, Hamilton take cross country sprint titles: Olympian Kikkan Randall led from start to finish to claim the gold medal in the women’s freestyle sprint at Anchorage, Alaska, the first of four events in the 2010 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships.

Randall edged Rebecca Dussault, an eight-time national champion. Laura Valaas was third.

In the men’s event, Hamilton caught and passed Hinckley on the final approach to the finish line, a winding curve that leads to a straightaway in the stadium. Hamilton’s time on the 1.7-kilometer course was 2:53.8.
