Prep roundup: CV wrestlers improve to 5-0

Central Valley powered to a 29-0 advantage, capped by returning state placer Jarod Maynes’ 19-4 technical fall at 119 pounds, and defeated host Mt. Spokane 47-22 Thursday in a meeting of 4-0 Greater Spokane League wrestling teams.

Sheldon Cole (215), Roger Ulrich (103) and Logan Ames (112) posted major decisions in helping the Bears to the big lead.

Wyatt Maguire (125) picked up the Wildcats’ first win, pinning Tyler Ames in the third round after trailing 6-4 in a matchup of seniors. Maguire placed seventh at state last season.

Jacob Hollenbeck added a 59-second pin for CV at 145. Mt. Spokane finished the night with Taylor Whentzel’s 12-3 major decision at 171.

University 57, East Valley 14: Three-time state participant Ryan Zumwalt (152) pinned state alternate Nick Coleck in the first round to help the Titans (6-0) to a win over the host Knights (1-5). U-Hi’s Brandon Byers (125) pinned Drew Keller in 27 seconds. The undefeated Titans and CV don’t meet until the last meet of the season, Jan. 28 at U-Hi.

North Central 51, Rogers 21: Jared Berlinger defeated Vang Lor 6-2 at 119 in a meeting of state participants as the host Indians moved to 4-1 by defeating the Pirates (1-4). Berlinger, a state placer at 112, is ranked first among 3A wrestlers by Washington Wrestling Report. Lor is ranked seventh. Ben Carter (171), Anthony Whitmarsh (215), Steven Taylor (285), Jacob Clute (125) and Mitchell Bocook (135) had pins for the Indians.

Ferris 60, Gonzaga Prep 6: Drew Sharkey (215), Anthony Canton (285) and Larson Stoll (119) registered pins in less than a minute and the visiting Saxons (2-3) totaled eight pins in a win over the Bullpups (0-6). Ferris’ Kaleb Michel pinned Ayrton Nelson in the second round at 130 after trailing 4-0. G-Prep’s Kris Whitfield pinned Jenya Nicks at 171.

Mead 43, Lewis and Clark 6: Sam Voitlaender edged Dillon Bush 4-3 at 171 to highlight the visiting Panthers’ win over the Tigers (1-5). Mead (3-3) had two pins, two major decisions and a technical fall.

Great Northern League

Riverside 59, Pullman 24: Brandon Roberts’ 26-second pin at 103, the seventh of the night for the visiting Rams (2-0), capped a win over the Greyhounds (0-2). Kit Major (125) and Chase Florez (160) added first-round pins for Riverside. Pullman’s Tyler Surface, normally on junior varsity, notched an 11-9 win at 171.

Deer Park 45, Cheney 23: State champion Shawn Burton had a first-round pin at 285 to help the visiting Stags (2-0) cap a win over the Blackhawks (0-1). DP state champ Billy Rhoads added a pin at 145. In a matchup of state participants at 171, Cheney’s Ryan McNair scored a 12-3 major decision over Aaron Frank.

West Valley 60, Colville 17: The visiting Eagles (1-0) jumped to a 47-0 lead in cruising past the Indians (0-2). Josh Hamilton’s pin at 112 ended WV’s shutout. WV started with Luke Konzal’s pin at 140, Derek Lane’s 22-5 technical fall at 145 and Devon Silva’s 10-0 major decision at 152.

Newport 56, Timberlake 33: Clint Hunt led three players in double figures with 12 points and added seven rebounds to lift the host Grizzlies (4-8) past the Tigers (5-5). Newport held Timberlake to 11-for-65 shooting from the floor while snapping a four-game losing streak. Ryan Sacksteder had 13 rebounds for the Tigers.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 57, Lakeside (Idaho) 44: Ben Leifheit hit 4 of 6 3-pointers to help the visiting Panthers (8-4) past the Knights (4-6) at Plummer. Nate Weaselhead had 21 points for Lakeside, which shot just 2 of 11 from the field in the second half.

Timberlake 48, Newport 37: Cassie Thompson scored 24 points and the visiting Tigers (12-1) jumped to a 21-5 lead and held off the Grizzlies (7-5) to avenge their lone loss of the season. Thompson had a basket and Kara Wenstrom added a three-point play after Newport closed within six points. Newport’s Miranda Frederick scored 17.

Gymnastics

Stacie Davis placed third in the all-around and Kaleigh Campbell took fifth to guide University to a narrow win over runner-up Shadle Park during a five-way Greater Spokane League meet at Rogers. University scored 157.675 points to Shadle’s 153.05. Shadle had the top two placers in the all-around, Alana Norman (36.45) and Hailey Barry (33.95). Norman swept the individual events, with an 8.75 on the uneven bars, 9.15 on the balance beam, 9.35 in the floor exercise and 9.2 on the vault. Davis scored 33.25 in the all-around, followed by Lewis and Clark’s Lily Hoch (32.8) and Campbell (32.225).
