Chiefs tame Tigers on road

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta – The Spokane Chiefs used a three-goal second period to break the game open Wednesday and goalie James Reid made them stand up for a 4-2 Western Hockey League victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Chiefs (25-15-3-1) improved to 1-1 on an eight-game road trip.

The Chiefs pulled into a second-place tie in the U.S. Division with Portland.

Mitch Wahl started Spokane off and running with a goal at the 1:34 mark of the second period. Kyle Beach and Jared Spurgeon assisted on Wahl’s 18th tally of the season.

Kenton Miller stretched the Chiefs’ advantage to 2-0 when he scored at 4:30 in the second on assists from Jared Cowen and Blake Gal. It was Miller’s eighth goal of the season.

Medicine Hat (26-14-3-5) pulled within a goal on Emerson Etem’s 30th score of the season, at 5:19.

But the Chiefs answered with their third goal of the period – a Dominik Uher netter at 7:51 – to increase the lead to 3-1. Steve Kuhn assisted on Uher’s second goal of the season.

Spokane put the game out of reach with Levko Koper’s 19th goal of the year – at 6:54 in the third period. Wahl assisted on the score.

Etem added a goal on a power play at 12:07.
