EMERSON/GARFIELD – The Spokane office of the Washington state Department of Revenue, 1330 N. Washington St., will host a free workshop for new and small business owners on Tuesday, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will receive a workbook and reference guide to Department of Revenue rules and regulations and will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection, and record-keeping requirements.

Clunker bicycles earn credit at shop

RIVERSIDE – Union Gospel Mission and Pedals2People, along with Two Wheel Transit, 1405 W. First Ave., have joined together for the Bike Cash for Clunkers program, running through Feb. 15.

The program will first help the community bring their old, unused bikes out of the garage or basement and put them to good use. Two Wheel Transit will assess each bike for safety and serviceability and issue an in-store credit from $25 to $100 toward the purchase price of any 2010 Trek or Gary Fisher bicycle at the store, or in stock at Trek Bicycles. The bicycle shop will then service and transport suitable bikes to UGM and Pedals2People.

Some services closed Monday due to holiday

SPOKANE – Spokane City Hall, Municipal Court, the East Central Community Center and other city facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Spokane Public Library branches also will be closed.

Garbage pickup and curbside recycling will proceed as usual and the garbage transfer stations and the waste-to-energy facility will be open.

The Spokane City Council briefing session and legislative meeting will be held on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively in the City Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The Ice Palace in Riverfront Park, along with the Imax Theater, the Looff Carrousel, and Spokane Falls Skyride will remain open on Monday. Luncheon at SFCC to honor King

WEST HILLS – The Spokane Falls Community College African American Student Association will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a banquet-style luncheon on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Union Building Lounges A, B and C, Building 17, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

Rod Holmes will be the featured speaker and musical entertainment will be provided by saxophonist Jermaine Carlton and vocalist Martin Herford.

Cost for the banquet is $5 per person and $2 for SFCC students.

Davis named to library board

SPOKANE COUNTY – Dan Davis, a resident of Glenrose, was recently appointed to the Spokane County Library District’s board of trustees by the board of county commissioners. Davis’ term began on Jan. 1 and will run through 2014.

Davis’ career includes more than 25 years with the Washington State Patrol as a trooper, detective and president of the Troopers Association. After leaving the WSP, he graduated from Gonzaga Law School. He has practiced law for both Spokane County and the city of Spokane, and is currently a commissioner for Spokane Municipal Court.

Davis replaces Frank Payne, who served on the Library Board for 10 years.

The run will include 5k, 10k, 25k and 50k trail events.
