In brief: Lecture, supply drive mark holiday

CHENEY – Eastern Washington University will celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday with a lecture by Angela Schwendiman, a lecturer in Africana Studies at EWU, on Tuesday at noon in Showalter Hall, Room 109, and the “A Day On, Not a Day Off” school supply drive, to benefit Cheney grade school students. The supply drive runs through Jan. 22.

Schwendiman’s topic will be “Ambassadors of Peace During Times of War: Comparing Strategies and Analogies of President Barack Obama and Civil Rights Activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

School supplies needed include erasers, crayons, glue sticks, No. 2 pencils, pens, boxes of tissues and white notebook paper.

Supplies can be dropped off at the EWU Bookstore in the Pence Union Building, the Africana Education Program office, 204 Monroe or at the Cheney Dollar Store, 2424 First St. All contributions will be distributed by Cheney Outreach.

Homebuyers meeting planned

NORTHWEST – Community Frameworks will hold an informational meeting about homeownership opportunities and affordable mortgage lending for first-time homebuyers on Tuesday at the Shadle Branch Library, 2111 W. Wellesley Ave., at 6 p.m.

Potential homebuyers can learn about communities Community Frameworks is currently building in and how they can purchase a new-construction home with affordable financing and down payment assistance.

Gallery hosts Carrousel items

RIVERSIDE – An exhibition of artifacts and artwork at the Chase Gallery, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., will celebrate the 100th-year anniversary of the Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park through Feb. 26. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The display will include artwork by Michael Gass, Nona Hengen, Betty Largent, Loraine Krank and Jessie Swanson.

The exhibit will also display artifacts from the Looff Carrousel, including several antique horses and figures. Completed horses and horses under construction by Mark Blomhagen also will be exhibited.

Host family sought for student

MEAD – A host family is needed for a Mead High School student for February through June.

The high school senior is from Finland and has been living in Spokane since August.

The host family will need to be in the Mead area, but the student is not required to live in the district. The Mead student has her own monthly spending allowance and insurance. Host families are asked to provide meals and a bed to sleep in.

GU event explores women of Bible

LOGAN – “Weaving Our Sisters’ Voices,” a performance of dance, music and poetry, will be performed at Gonzaga University in the Harry and Colleen Magnuson Theatre on Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m.

Students will illustrate the lives of women, named and unnamed, from biblical times and explore how their lives relate to contemporary times.
