Know the law, follow the rules
Today (Jan. 13) I read a letter in The Spokesman-Review pertaining to the red light cameras at some intersections in the city. The writer suggested drivers avoid these intersections and take other routes to avoid tickets. He states he becomes apprehensive when approaching these intersections.
The idea behind the cameras at these intersections is not only to generate income for the city but to warn drivers they must stop as the light turns red. RCW (Revised Code of Washington) 46.61 states a yellow light indicates the green light has ended and a red light will follow; then do not enter the intersection. A red light indicates the vehicle must stop.
A recent article in this paper said the city was considering a program to educate drivers they must stop for red lights at intersections. This education should be prior to obtaining a driver’s license.
Don’t be so worried about the cameras – just be ready to stop when the light changes. An accident usually happens when someone does not follow the rules.
