Region in brief: Man injured after dozing at wheel

From Staff Reports

A 90-year-old Montana man received minor injuries Wednesday after he fell asleep at the wheel and drove his van off a steep embankment along Interstate 90 in Shoshone County.

Henry Hanson was westbound on I-90 in a minivan when the van crossed over the centerline, went through both eastbound lanes of traffic, crashed through a guardrail and fell down a steep embankment, Idaho State Police said.

Hanson was transported to Shoshone Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injuries, ISP said. He was wearing a seat belt.

School leaders to field calls

Community members can phone in during an hourlong live show this week to talk to Spokane Public Schools board members and the district superintendent.

“Educating Spokane” airs at 7 p.m. today on KSPS, channel 7.

School Board President Sue Chapin, Vice President Bob Douthitt and Director Rocky Treppiedi will join Superintendent Nancy Stowell to answer questions from the public.

During the show, the question hot line is (509) 354-7711.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrests

Sheriff’s deputies seized 18 ounces of methamphetamine and more than $16,000 in cash in a traffic stop near the Northern Quest Casino parking lot early Tuesday.

A 41-year-old Ritzville man and a 19-year-old Spangle woman were arrested after a deputy monitoring the casino parking lot stopped the car they were in.

Driver David B. Hill was arrested after the deputy learned his license was suspended, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies found a small bag of meth in Hill’s pocket along with more than $1,600.

In the Mazda were about 18 ounces of methamphetamine, a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol and more than $15,000 in cash, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Passenger Tara Leena Rader was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and appeared in Spokane County Superior Court Wednesday on one count of felony possession of a controlled substance.

Hill, who is out of jail on bond, also faces charges of meth possession.

Rader was featured in several Spokesman-Review stories after she was shot in the face at close range by her then-boyfriend in 2004.
