Left-behind license plate leads to hit-and-run suspect

Police say a Colbert man arrested for hit-and-run Monday left a crucial clue at the crash scene: his truck’s license plate. Ashdon W. Hammack, 32, fell asleep while driving on Country Homes Boulevard early Monday and careened into a building at 8606 N. Wall, according to a news release. His car caused “extensive damage,” and the rubble included his truck license plate and a broken turn signal lense. Spokane County sheriff’s deputies identified Hammack through Washington Department of Licensing records and contacted him at his home, where they found the damaged truck. Investigators say Hammack returned to the crash scene to see what he’d hit, but “he never did contact police or the building’s owner.” He was arrested and released on charges of hit-and-run and second-degree negligent driving.
