CV baseball clinches top district seed

Coedy Cooley’s sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning Saturday gave Central Valley the lead for good as the Bears clinched the top seed in the District 8 4A tournament with a 7-6 Greater Spokane League baseball win over the host Mead Panthers (12-5).

After CV starter Corey Mack allowed four runs in the fifth, Scott Simon came on in relief, allowing no runs for the win.

By recording the win against the third-place Panthers, the Bears (14-3) locked up second place in the GSL and the top spot among 4A teams, regardless of their final GSL game against Mt. Spokane. The Wildcats, a 3A team, have clinched first place.

In other GSL games, David McNeill had two hits, including a double, and went the distance to earn the win as Lewis and Clark (11-6) outlasted host Shadle Park 10-7. Tyler Pfeffer and Parker Scott both hit homers for the Highlanders (6-13). … Conner Slater allowed three runs in five innings, striking our four and added two hits and two RBIs, as host Gonzaga Prep (6-11) put away North Central (2-15) with three runs in the sixth for a 7-3 win. … The game between Rogers (2-14) and University (10-6) was postponed by rain. It will be made up on Tuesday.

•Randy Fuller threw a five-inning no-hitter as Clarkston (11-5, 7-5) salvaged a split of its Great Northern League doubleheader, beating Deer Park (2-14, 1-11) 10-0 after falling 9-8 in the opener.

DP’s Zach Mohr and Alex Wolf had three hits apiece in the opener.

In other GNL games, Matt Walker struck out nine and allowed just three baserunners in the opener as Cheney (14-2, 11-1) swept host Medical Lake (9-7, 5-7) 12-2, 8-2. The Blackhawks’ Mike Torkelson hit a two-run homer in the second game that coach Randy Elam said may have been the longest at Cheney Ballpark. … Ben Foster allowed no runs in five innings and added a two-run home run in the fourth inning as host West Valley (10-4, 9-3) completed a sweep against Colville (6-11, 4-8), winning 10-0 in six innings after taking the opener 11-4. Drew Clausen helped jolt the Eagles’ offense in the first game, with two doubles and four RBIs. … The doubleheader between Riverside (4-12, 2-8) and Pullman (8-6, 7-3) was postponed by rain and will be played Monday in Pullman.

•Jordan Guidry’s 11 strikeouts complemented his 2-1 no-hitter, lifting St. Maries (7-12, 6-3) over host Priest River (10-9, 6-3) in the opener of an Intermountain League doubleheader. The Spartans (10-9, 6-3) won the second game 3-2.

Elsewhere, the IML doubleheader between Bonners Ferry and host Kellogg was postponed by rain and will be made up at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Softball

Allison Holst went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs and allowed two runs on five hits to lead Colville (12-0, 10-0) to a 7-2 win in the second game of a Great Northern League sweep at West Valley. The Indians beat the Eagles (11-5, 7-3) 5-1 in the opener.

The first-place Indians hold a three-game lead with four league games remaining.

In other GNL doubleheaders, Amelia Cook drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Medical Lake (1-15, 1-9) came from behind to beat visiting Cheney (7-8, 4-6) 6-5. In the second game, Ryelynn Mendoza’s two-run double capped a four-run sixth inning as the Blackhawks made it a split, winning 9-5. … The games between Riverside and Pullman were postponed by rain and will be played Tuesday at Pullman. … The games between Deer Park and Clarkston were postponed by rain. No make-up date was set.

Track and field

Katie Knight won the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 7.12 seconds and took second in the 1,500 to lead North Central to a seventh-place finish at the Lake Washington Invitational in Kirkland, Wash.

NC’s Celena Ward won the javelin with a throw of 131 feet, 5 inches.

Kentwood won the meet with 58.75 points, 27 more than NC (31). Central Valley took 16th and Ferris tied for 27th.

Alexa Lindseth of Ferris threw 125-10 in the discus to place third, 3 feet off the mark of champion Becky Duhamel of Wenatchee. CV’s 1,600 relay team also took third in 4:06.77.

•Shelby Maurer won the 100 (12.63) and 200 (26.73) to lead five Cheney athletes who won track events as the Blackhawks narrowly edged Cashmere for the girls title at the Keith Jewett Invitational in Ellensburg, scoring 115.5 points to win by three points.

The Cheney boys finished second to Monroe (108), scoring 101 points to edge Ellensburg (99) and Cashmere (91).
