Local chefs grilling it up for barbecue bragging rights

Three Spokane chefs will showcase their best barbecue for a friendly competition Saturday at Pool World in Spokane Valley.

Chicken ’n’ More owner and cook Bob Hemphill; Jeremy Hansen, owner and chef at Santé Restaurant and Charcuterie; and Gary Swiss, owner and cook at Crazy G’s, will be grilling and smoking for bragging rights and a new grill between 1 and 5 p.m.

The meat was provided by Spencer’s For Steaks and Chops and the cooks will be demonstrating Weber grills and Traeger smokers, which are sold at the store.

A panel of three judges will pick the best Q, and there will be plenty of eats and refreshments for spectators who come to check it out, says Shawna Reynolds of Pool World.

Pool World’s Valley store is located at 13524 E. Sprague Ave.

DrinkNectar tasting June 3

DrinkNectar blogger Josh Wade is back with a new tasting event.

This time, Wade is joining forces with Sean Sullivan of WAWineReport.com, Washington Tasting Room magazine, the Washington Wine Commission and a dozen other Washington wine writers for a virtual wine tasting on June 3.

WAWine is designed to turn the eyes of the virtual world to Washington wines in June with a simultaneous tasting.

The event will include tasting parties at more than 100 wineries in Washington and highlights other wine events such as Wine Rocks in Seattle, Taste Washington Spokane and the 2010 Wine Bloggers Conference in Walla Walla.

For those who haven’t participated in a virtual tasting before, here’s how it works: Buy a Washington wine and plan to taste it on Thursday, June 3.

On Twitter, log on at 5 p.m. and follow the hash tag #WAWine. Use that keyword in any posts so others can see your tasting notes.

For Facebook users, join the group at www.facebook.com/tasteandtweet. Upload photos, share comments on the wine and connect with other Washington wine drinkers there.

Arbor Crest Wine Cellars, Barrister Winery and Whitestone wineries are planning to participate. For more information about the event, go to wawine.eventbrite.com.
